GTX780 or wait?

I know no one can decide for me but really trying to figure out if I just bite the bullet now and build my new system with the GTX780 or wait till the new ones released.

The build will last me 2-3years at least, so trying to get future proof as much as I can. I just know as soon as I buy it, Nvidia will announce a 50% and cheaper card
Also buying it now and selling it later is not really an option, I do not care for pulling it out and trying to ebay or craiglist.

yes, I am sticking with Nvidia this time around.

I am running a Radeon 4850, ya its old. It did run Titanfall on all low settings, which kinda surprised me.

thats kinda what I am thinking too, 6-9months. decisions decisions, do I suffer with the 4850 in Titanfall which will be my playing game for 6-9 or bite it and get the 780.

Big GPUs aren't coming for another 8 or 9 months at least which is quite long. If you really want to play Titanfall well a 760 or 770 is also good and you can save the 200-300 dollars and upgrade early.

Personally I would do that.

I'd just get a 780 with a good cooler and O/C it. You'll likely never see the difference in actual game play between them.

Go for the 780. 880's will be a while and I wouldn't be surprised if the 880 "midrange" chip like the 680 was. The big gains will come from a node shrink which is quite far off.

Agreed. I think we may see a pretty good uptick from maxwell due to the unusual die-shrink-like nature of the desgin (lower power consumption and higher density, ie exactly what a die shrink does). But I doubt that will be any time soon for the big GPUs, and like you say it will probably be a souped up midrange chip first

If the rest of your system is as old as the 4850, I would look into a complete rebuild. What are your CPU and Motherboard specs? I really think that around 450 dollars the 780 is a great card, so if you find one in the price range, go for it.

I was faced with this decision a couple of months ago. I wanted to upgrade my video card (an H6870) which was over 3 years old (the rest of the system was fine; see sig). I had my eye on the R290x but non-reference designs were slow to market and then prices skyrocketed due to the mining premium. When the R290 series was released, NVidia dropped prices and that, in conjunction with a good deal on the MSI Lightning GTX780, forced my hand and I bought the 780. I expect it to be my graphic card for 3+ years.

Personally, if you're not able to play games that you want to play now, I'd say build a new system and go with a 780. Look around for deals on them -- I lucked into my Lightning for $499 at Newegg. The moral of the story here is that new stuff will always be coming out and as others have said, we're still 8 or 9 months away from any new major release and even then, how do you know which cards will be released? In the past, NVidia has released mid-range cards first and then rolled out the higher-end cards a month or two later (they've also done the reverse as well).

Go for it now. As others have said nothing is impending in the next month or two and titanfall will get a nice boost from the upgrade.

For the money save the $200-250 and get a 780. I've seen some deals for 450ish that can oc pretty well.

Another option to consider are 2 gtx770's in sli. This is if you're considering a 780ti.

If you are not happy with your current gaming experience, upgrade now to 780. I personally don't think the price difference between the regular 780 and 780 Ti is worth the difference in performance. 780s can occasionally be found under $500 new, used usually around $450. If you are only gaming at 1080p, then a 770 or 760 might be enough depending on what you play.

As long as the rest of your system won't bottleneck a GTX 780, I'd say go for it now. Also, the GTX 780 TI just isn't worth the premium. There's nothing out there that a GTX 780 TI will make playable over a GTX 780.

Today, Egg's shipper will deliver my 780 GTX to replace a GTX 570. I got about three years out of the 570, and replacing it was less a matter of need than want.

With the rate of technical progress, I'd think that the difference between Kepler and Maxwell won't mean that much to me. Or put it another way: the jump from 570 with 1.28GB VRAM to a 780 with 3GB of VRAM and less-limited multi-monitor support is worth spending the money now, versus waiting for Maxwell to provide an extra increment that I won't notice or need for some longer period of time.

This is not a pronouncement on someone else's pending decision, but someone making such a decision might want to apply the same factors and reasoning in their choices.

And after all -- I don't "need" to swap the 780 for the 570 like I need to eat a decent breakfast every morning. It's a luxury that I'm willing to afford for the extra features and performance edge.

Yes, that would be nice -- getting a 780 for $450 or less. But I'm not going to worry about that now: the sucker was delivered today, and I'm getting ready to drop it into my system.

Usually, I don't purchase "extended warranty" insurance. Figure if there's a problem, you can just RMA. But this time -- I did it. About four Mexican dinners-worth.
