Guild Wars - A Disappointment?

Well, looking back I think GW was a disappointment, IMO, because I was looking for a "new version" of Diablo II, with low level characters, better graphics, and same sized characters but with cool new spells that was as fun as the original.

GW is bullshit. Resurrection, Healing in fvcking duels? That's just BS. If you've dueled in GW and D2, you will know the difference. D2 was alot funner. You had unique looking characters, as opposed to the clones in GW (red armored with a long sword and shield warriors running all around).

And your PvP character was already built for you? What the fvck is the fun in that? You can't level up any more? There is no fun in that. D2 was awesome because you could climb up the ladder, and at the same time duel in games. Seperating the two just ruins the fun.

The 3rd person view in D2 was awesome, your character was small and you could see alot. I don't remember alot in GW, but I remember that it was sort of a first person feel, and maybe there was an option for 3rd person view but the character was rather large...

Towns in Diablo II were small. You had the Rogue Encampment, which had the blacksmith, Akara, Cain, Gheed, and the rogue hero... the map was small and you knew where you were headed...

As for GW, Oh man. The maps are fvcking HUGE. You have to run up fvcking steps and search all around the castle just to get to one ncp...

I'm not sure if they implemented a ladder system, but the ladder was also fun. Channels are so much better than just going into a huge ass castle and wandering around.

Maybe I'm just comparing Diablo II to MMORPG's in general, but I expected GW to be a newer, better version of D2 and to me it was disappointing.

So, how many of you play it and what are your thoughts?

EDIT 2: NO. My previous post was mean and nasty for no darn good reason.
I have been spending way too much time in OT and I'm turning into an asshole.

Alright dude, heres the most constructive thing I can say:
Blizzard hasnt made a sequal yet. I think thats the only thing that can please you.
GW is a different game made by a different company. (Thats all I can say about that.)
If you think D2 is better than go play D2.

Don't worry shortylickens, as you can tell from his sig ItmPls is "special". He is impervious to the harsh sting of criticism, logic, and good taste, and therefore your post did no lasting harm.

Well, it was made by former Blizzard Employees, as blizzard is no longer the same bliz that made d2, sc, wc3, wc2, wc, d1, and sc:bw... so I was expecting them to take the good qualities of D2 and transfer them into a better, more evolved version of D2.

The game is a technological marvel, but I just didn't think it was fun. I'm hoping it continues to succeed, though, if only to add some diversity to what is quickly becoming a stagnant genre.

I hate(d) it. I bought a game promising to end the drudgery of MMORPGs (questing to get special items, etc) when in fact it's exactly what it claims to not be.
"Experience skill-based PvP where skill, not items, determine the course of battle!"
BS. You have to "unlock" better skills and items, creating a distinct advantage for those that spend their time grinding away.

Most towns in GW are small, that is a similarity to D2. GW PvP is way more fleshed out than D2 PvP. If you don't like GW PvP in comparison it is probably because you are getting beat by skilled players and it frustrates you.

The biggest dissapointment in GW is their design and implementation of the outdoor world. It is simply not fun to explore, the quests are very rarely rewarding and the best parts of the game are the instances and pvp wars fought much later on. In other words, the game was more fun when you started at level 15 towards the end of the game in the world preview than it was when you started at level 1 regularly. And while level 15 should be more rewarding, if level 1 isn't fun you've run into a massive design flaw.

It sounds like you haven'y actuallly spent that much time playing GW.
*There is a 3rd person mode and you can zoom way out
*If you choose a quest character you can PvP and lvl by doing quests

You seem very mad because GW isn't D2, why not play D2 then?

I agree with this - this is why I stopped playing guild wars. PvE just got too boring to continue. PVP, however, very fun and balanced, something you really can't say for D2, honestly.

played it for a month and finally decided that these kind of games deffinately isn't me.

Too much running around trying to: get to the quest, find people who might join you in questing or trade stuff. All very boring IMHO.

Well, I thought the game was fun. I liked that I didnt have to pay to keep playing it.

Many folks around here will tell you that you get what you pay for and that free MMORPG's are crap. My attitude is they are all crap. Guild Wars was the only one I could stomach enough to play as much as once a week. I did try everquest way back when it first came out. In my mind its one of the worst RPG's if not the worst game to ever come out. The fact that it was one of the most popular doesnt suprise me a bit.
I thought all big ones were just as boring and tedious, but they survive somehow. (Star Wars, Final Fantasy, Everquest 1 and 2.)

I have a pretty limited time for gaming so when I game I don't want to use it for my character running around to non-adrenalin pumping battles. I'll stick to my TBS, FPS and a little Warhammer 40K.

Unfortunately the days of the smaller characters with fixed camera angles are dying out. If Blizzard ever did make a sequel, I think you can expect it to be the same: zoomable camera that will allow 3rd or first person play. However the 3rd person will have larger characters. Personally, I hate the zoomable camera, and would prefer a fixed one with smaller characters like in D2 and Baldur's Gate. But, we can't all get what we want.

My complaint about GW is the class system. Back in my dorkier PnP RPG days of old, I always held multiclassing in absolute disdain. Unfortunately this game is built around that notion. It has really kept me from enjoying it. So, I have only played it a couple of times.

Sounds like someone got owned a few too many times in GW PvP.

Seriously, all of the things you listed as negatives I look at as positives. The fact that a player can participate in PvP from day one without going through the dumb grind most games require is nothing short of genius. It only bothers those who think of leveling as 'hard work'. That's crap and deep down everyone knows it. Leveling = time. Some have more free than others.

Owned? More like couldn't stand the 10-15 minute boring ass duels with resurrection and healing. Rather have the whirlwind, die, pick up body, own him back, quick type duels as opposed to this pos.

Then that puts you in the 'instant satisfaction' category that these games are not designed for.

If you looking for more similar D2 slash and hack action, try Dungeon Siege 2. As a D2 fan, DS2 is the next best thing right now I have to say. no PvP tho if thats what you looking for.

I just happened to have a copy of DS2 for sale on my FS thread if interested

This is a team game, it isn't called solo wars. Also, in PVP in Guild Wars you can't run and hide in town, maybe that's why you don't like it.

I like GW a lot, since you solicited opinions. I find it quite interesting and challenging figuring out what combinations of professions and associated skills are effective in the various parts of the game, and how my customized characters complement or interact with the other members of a party.

GW is one of the better realizations of an RPG in my opinion, because the character choices and items used are quite important to the success or failure of a character, a lot of RPGs have interesting varieties of characters, items, on paperp, but in reality it either isn't all that important what you choose, or even worse, there are over-powered classes and items that you have to use to succeed. That isn't how it is in GW. You can't buy your way to success either, you've got to figure out what works and make it happen.
