Guild Wars Char building help

Im a total noob to GW, and the only other RPG ive played is Diablo2.

In trying to build a great char, what are some recommendations for class combination in terms of primary/seconday. Everybody and their brother is a W/M, so i assume that's a good one...but i enjoy the Ranger and Elementalist. What would go good with them as primary, and what are some good skills and tactics to invest in?

A second side question if anyone knows...wtf good is a mesmer for? is it worth a damn at all or just good for rounding out a guild?

Mesmers seem good for debuffing the enemy. They actually have a nice set of skills that are completed by or complement other spellcasting stuff.

Mesmer's are quite deadly in pvp. I can shutdown a healer or a caster easy. And in pve you can kill a charr healer wtih a single spell (backfire). Cast it on him and he will kill himself healing the charr warriros. They also have some good dd's. Have you concidered a Ele/ranger? You could focus on ele skills like earth to blind your targets and incrase your ac (plus some good dd and aoe's) and use energy stroage to get over the high cost of ranger skills. Then focus on the ranger skills to inturpt casters and do the majority of the damage. Or focus on lighting/fire to do damage and use ranger skills as a backup for low mana (get high marksmenship) or to intrupt casting.

I have found every single combo to be a viable good character class. You just have to know how to play it. I'd focus on a PvE build, you can always make a level 20 pvp character or take back your points and reassign them for a pvp character.
