Also a big thing is to not get discouraged and quit after 1-2 months and not really noticing any drastic changes.

A lot of people expect instant change or to all of the sudden start looking ripped and when they arent they feel what they are doing isnt accomplishing anything and quit. You will start noticing decent changes by the 12-16 week mark (8 weeks if your cardio is good) and believe me when I say that once you do start seeing those changes you will "Want" to goto the gym instead of just going to the gym...if that makes any sense.

Get a lifting partner. Knowing that someone else is depending on you in order to let them workout (as a spotter and whatnot) pretty well forces you to get to the gym. And for most people, once they are actually at the gym they enjoy it.

Also, dont think that "I'm too tired to lift after working all day" is a valid excuse. I am NOT a morning person, and my co-worker is my lifting partner, so we lift after we finish working for the day. If I can go lifting after 14 hours of working as a roofer, you can lift after doing your job, too. Lifting at night does tend to cost you a little intensity, but that doesnt mean you cant get a good workout. Most of it is in your mind, especially if you do not have an active job. You can help mentally get ready to work with some good motivational music. Songs that I notice tend to get me in a state of mind to get an extra couple reps are along the lines of:
Static-X - Bled for Days
KMFDM - F*ck Me
KMFDM - Muppets Theme Remix (no, I'm not joking about this one)
KMFDM - Remix of "Du Riechst So Gut" by Rammstein
Prodigy - Diesel Power
Prodigy - Smack My B*tch Up
RATM - Bulls on Parade

go with your friends. you can all spot each other on weights and hit up the treadmill and turn it into a hangout thing instead of a nervousness thing.

Try to find basketball pickup games at nearby churches, thats what I do now, MUCH more fun than working out regularly at gyms in my opinion, and its FREE.

What motivates you to go to the gym if you do go?
What time of day do you go?

Just look at your weight, that should be motivation enough.

2.5 months ago i was 6'5 and 330lbs. I got sick of my appearance. Seeing myself as fat has been my motivation for going to the gym.

Today I weigh 300lbs, averaging a loss of about 2.5lbs/wk.

My motivation has been seeing myself as fat, and beating myself up over it. Probably not the most psychologically healthy, but dieing at 34 of a Heart Attack is not too good either.

I'd say congrats to you, but then I read your sig.

I'm glad you're starting to live a healthy lifestyle and kudos to you, but Nik is a friend of mine.

Yeah, that was pretty immature.

I forgot it was in there, and now it has been removed permanetly.

Motivation? Knowing that I've thrown my money away if I don't go.

If that doesn't motivate you, try this: Gyms share the same business model as rebate companies: they know that a good percentage of their members will do what you're doing: buy a membership but never (or rarely) attend. So by going to the gym, if nothing else, you're sort of sticking it to the man.

Two things:

1. Bookmark this thread. Refer to it whenever you're sitting in front of the computer surfing ATOT when you could be at the gym.

2. Just drive to the gym without thinking why you're going there. Like you'd drive to the store or anywhere else, just drive there. When you get there, then you can start to process why you're there, and by that point, since you're already there, you'll probably not want to turn back.

Looking in the mirror is motivation enough for me. No one can force you to do this sh!t. Either you want to, or you don't. You're the one that has to find the willpower to make it happen. End of story.

60-90 min is all you really need to be spending in the gym. 20-30 min on cardio and the rest lifting weights. Try not to rest too much in between sets...2 min tops...and dont waste time in the gym standing around talking and resting too much....higher intensity workouts will do you much better at this stage.

get a buddy to come with you, if he is in the same position as you then thats enough motivation, who can drop more by a certain timeframe
