I agree you need to get a workout buddy. That will really help. You can't be so self-conscious when you go to the gym either. Yeah, people might talk, but big deal? You're there, and you're actively working to get into shape. You will be more respected than someone who sits on the couch and watches tv.
Going to the gym isn't the only thing you need to do. Eating healthy is a major key in weight-loss. I would check out the Bodybuilding.com forums, they have topics like this all over the place. Good luck.

Look at yourself in the mirror, maybe naked and ask yourself... "If I was a chick, would I want to fvck me?" Most likely the answer is OH HELL NO.

Start off slowly...maybe make it a point to go 2-3 times a week and stick to it....when i started out 5 yrs ago. I made myself goto the gym mon wed and fri for 1hr each time. Once you start noticing results you will start getting addicted to it.

Also like some people have stated finding a workout partner to go with you is a good idea also. Especially to help you keep going on days you want to slack off or may skip out on.

Dont worry about what you think others may say about you being in the gym. You're in there...you're trying to make a difference and a change in your lifestyle...which is better than most.

ALso watch your diet...losing weight and getting fit is like 70% diet and 30% working out..

Going in the mornings is good also. You will definetly feel better about yourself the rest of the day...plus you will jumpstart your metabolism which will allow you to burn more calories throughout the day.

Which reminds me, every time I run 1+ miles hard (and no, i am not in shape at all), my ankles hurt like hell when I use stairs the next day. What stretch am I missing?

Keep this in mind:

All you have to do is make yourself go long enough so that you start to see results. As soon as you do start to see them you will *want* to go to the gym and you will feel like crap when you don't.

this is very true.....i feel like a slug whenever i choose to skip a day and always regret it. but it is also nice to take extended breaks once you have been going steadily for awhile to give your body some rest and also to avoid peaking out and not making any further gains.

When you start out. I wouldnt bother with weight lifting. I would just start out jogging every morning, some place nice and differetn every once in a while. Go for about 2 miles, or whatever you are capable of make sure you push yourself and don't get discouraged because you are out of shape, you will se results soon enough. So in short, do cardio work to lose the extra pounds, and then go to the gym and start lifting, find a gym dude to help you out. Just what I would do, dont know if its best

a combination of 20-30 min cardio and 40 mins of weight lifting is probably a good way to start. start lifting light weights with high repetitions.

I agree, it's a whole lot easier to work out before going to work. (it also gives you an energy boost for the entire day)

I love the energy boost it gives me, but since I need to be out the door by 7:15, getting up at 5:30 to go to the gym is tough.

Very true, especially once you start developing the nagging injuries, but I don't think he's quite there yet.

Like Nike says, just do it.

Even if you don't want to go, convince yourself that there is no choice, you must go to the gym.

The only way to get started is to go! Once you see the results no one can stop you from going to the gym. My husband and I do mostly cardio, I run for about an hour, he uses the eliptical trainer for 2 to 4 hours straight. I burn roughly 600 calories or so. He burns through anywhere between 1700 to 3600 in the session. People there call him a nuclear reactor or something silly like that. When we first got started we only went for about 30 mins a day, but he increased the workout by 5 mins almost every other day, until it is simply a matter of how much time we have before we have to leave for work. Now every couple of months he increases the resistance by one.

After we got in shape everything in life just seems so easy. It's hard to imagine not working out now. Don't worry about getting motivated. The improvement to your overall health will be more than enough incentive to get you going. Set a goal, have a plan, it is more fun than it would seem. After a while it will seem unthinkable to not go work out. Go in the morning, it makes the rest of your day feel high spirited and make you sleep so much better too.

Go in the morning then. I work 12 hour shifts, 9am to 9pm (4 days a week)... and i hit the gym for an hour in the morning.

What motivates you to go to the gym if you do go?

Lots of mirrors. When i'm overweight, then it shames and guilts me into going. When i'm fit, then it inspires me to go.

What time of day do you go?

Like i said, when i work, it's early in the morning. When i'm not, i try to go about 1pm or so, when it's not so busy (i like to sleep in when i'm not working). Classes will start soon though, so when that does, on my non-work days, i'll either be going very early in the morning or late at night... i'll get the feel for it and decide which is better for me.

I agree with all the posts about hot chicks. As dumb as it sounds, sex overpowers hunger.

Agreed on 70% diet, 30% workout. Today I ate 2 small, thinly sliced Chicken breasts. I cut up some lemon and threw both on the grille. Added some pepper, had two rolls and had sandwiches. May cut out the rolls next time though, any suggestions on that? Today I MAY eat a nutrigrain bar, if I'm really hungry. Today I drank about 180 fl oz of water as well. I hope it not too much. Ran for about 25 minutes on max incline, will go lifting in a couple of hours.

Make sure you check the scale every 3 days or so. Don't get discouraged. Some of us are in the same boat. My tip? Start dressing nicer, working out more, and sex will overpower hunger

For me it's the opposite. I enjoy food, so i like to eat. If i splurg too much, then i just exercise a little more or a little more intense. The gym isn't work or torture for me, i love it. It's getting the motivation to wake up 2 hrs early and getting out of the door that's the hard part, but once i'm there, more often than not i'm rushing through it because i'm short on time.

Heres my problem. I think to myself that I worked out today, so I can eat more. Don't worry get the chocolate cake since I worked out today. I rather just eat healthy natural foods since the taco bell I ate won't kill me when running.

Ok, so having a membership for 4 months I did nothing with it.
After all your motivation assistance. I will be waking up early and going to the gym before work.
This couldnt work out any better.

I basically get into work at 9 so I wont have to wake up extremely early.

I picked up a book today and have been reading it for a couple hours, To me it is excellent.
Its called The Abs Diet- by the editor of MensHealth Magazine.

It gives some ideas of workouts and basically how to eat healthy.

What motivates you to go to the gym if you do go?
What time of day do you go?

Just look at your weight, that should be motivation enough.

2.5 months ago i was 6'5 and 330lbs. I got sick of my appearance. Seeing myself as fat has been my motivation for going to the gym.

Today I weigh 300lbs, averaging a loss of about 2.5lbs/wk.

My motivation has been seeing myself as fat, and beating myself up over it. Probably not the most psychologically healthy, but dieing at 34 of a Heart Attack is not too good either.

I'd say congrats to you, but then I read your sig.

I'm glad you're starting to live a healthy lifestyle and kudos to you, but Nik is a friend of mine.

I dont pinch flab i can grab it

Amused, good point.

Im thinking my lack of desire/motivation to go to the gym is I may have anxiety.
I've never been to the gym so I dont know what to do there I know lift weights, use the treadmill...
But when I pick up 25lbs dumbells and the 15 year old next to me lifting 50lbs with his friends .
I feel like people stare at me or if they are wispering its about me

I guess I have some underlying issues.

trust me, there are tooooooons of people in the gym in worse shape then you. there are fat people, skinny people, all sorts of people.... don't think that everyone at the gym is going to be big and ripped, everyone has to start somewhere

no one will stare at you
