After having used $90 ER6i's and other high-end earbuds (noise canceling) I have always gone back to Creative EP-630's that you can get on ebay for $10. They are the most comfortable and offer terrific sound quality for almost no money.

I am sorry to inform you but the bose headphones really arn't that good. Bose was originally contracted by the Navy to make noise cancelling headphones and they were rejected by the Navy due to poor quality. The only reason you don't see bad reviews of Bose products is because Bose has sued audio magazines/publications in the past for the reviews. One case for liable against Consumer Reports went to all the way Supreme Court (and Bose lost), but it was years worth of legal fees that Bose caused Consumer Reports to expend. The publications are on enough thin margins that they just can't afford to deal with legal fees if Bose decides to sue.

Maybe you can do more research on how to POST a message on a forum like putting HEADPHONE in the title or something so people that have no interest in your problem don't have to bother reading it... I dunno why I'd even have to educate anyone on this...should be a no brainer.

The only reason I did it was because I read a post on another forum with exactly the same question and around 140 replies with people giving their opinion and not even answering the original question. It was epic.

However, your absoultely right... My apologies.

Can you point me in the direction of some good noise cancelling headphones apart from the ones by DrDre (Monster)? Thanks in advance.

I believe your primary problem is with titles.

Shure makes a good line of ear buds. Don't need to be noise canceling because if you get the buds to fit correctly the outside disappears. I keep them in on the plane even without music playing and it is the equivalent for me of having ear plugs in.

Shure consistently gets very positive reviews on head-fi and cnet.

I'm looking at around $250... $300 if they are awesome... thanks.

How portable and what environment do you need them for?

There's quite a few popular ones, and you might even wait a bit, as they're having CanJam right now, and there's a bunch of new products that should get announced/released. It won't likely make a huge difference, but might be worth it.

Some quick ones for you to look up:
Audio-Technica ATH-ES7, ATH-ESW9, ATH-M50 (all headphones, I don't know much about their IEMs)
Sennheiser HD-25II (headphone), HD-280 (headphone), IE8 (not sure the exact model name, its an IEM)
Westone 3, UM3X (both are IEMs, not entirely sure if they fit in your price when new)
Grado GR8 (IEM)
Beyerdynamic DT770 (there's several different models, all are decent to good), possibly a new portable headphone (T50, but I'm going to guess its gonna be out of your price range)
Ultrasone HFI-780, I don't think the ProLine 900 are in your price range (both are headphones).

Sorry, gonna stop there for now, I know there's a bunch I'm ignoring. I'd recommend checking out Head-Fi (do a search for your price range and portable and you should find a bunch, they actually have a Portable Headphone subforum).

Thanks for that mate.. maybe i'll wait a little longer (would you know how long?).
But generally speaking im looking for headphones as i'm not too much a fan of ear plugs.. dont want to rule them out but would rather the headphone approach.. In any case, the budget is around $300 being tops and i dont mind spending the $300. Noise cancelling is one of the primary reason (take a lot of planes and bored of the engine sound). I'm not going to lie and say im a music fan, i just listen occasionally but I want them to be good nonetheless...

The Bose will definitely not touch quality headphones in the $300 dollar range in terms of sound quality. However, they probably will beat out most anything in terms of noise cancellation. If you are planning on listening to something throughout the flight though, I don't think you'll need top notch cancellation.

I'd take a look at the Beyerdynamic DT770s and the Audio-Technica A900 (not the open version though). Audio-Technica's M50 headphones are also great, and only run about $100. If you're not really an audiophile or music lover, you probably don't need to spend much more than that to get something you'll really enjoy.

Have a listen to Sennheiser PXC350 or PX250 depending on if you want larger or more portable.

Only the half truth.... because Bose still does make noise canceling headphones for the Navy...and Army....the first iteration of the noise canceling was denied, but not due to poor quality. It was because it missed the mark put forth in the specifications (had to isolate xx db at xx Hz). Having dedicated numerous time and efforts, they had the idea that they could also sell these in the consumer market.

As a side bar, this technology actually was developed by a Northeastern University graduate.

You hit the nail on the head. Bose is king of the noise cancellation market.

Sound wise, yeah, it's a whole other issue that will be debated for life, but for that price range, Bose headphone are not the nest in terms of sound quality.

Oh....+1 on Beyerdynamic DT770s
