If you think cats "do not have the intellectual capacity for pride," you have not lived with one for long. I am not fond of the practice of shaving poodles either - I think they look asinine when overgroomed. At least dogs have tougher skin than cats, but both rely on their fur for protection from the sun and other hazards.
I've lived with cats all my life. They have the capacity for instinct, but pride is something that we perceive in their appearence, and has nothing to do with the animal's personality itself.
