I posted this on the software board too..no responses yet

I have received Halo for X-Mas, and I installed it on my system ( P4 2.4, 512MB Ram, MSI-845PE MAX, G4-Ti4200 64MB Video, Audigy Gamer, 60 GB IDE, 7200prm HD, Windows 2000), and it has been HELL!!!

My problem is as follows:

I run Halo and it starts up fine. I set up my settings and
click on Campaign, then set my difficulty level and hit
'Ok'. The game then suddenly (no more than 15 minutes, but usually less), minimizes and a small window pops up saying 'Gathering exception data...'. This window
stays here for a moment, then a Windows error pops up (the
one that asks you if you'd like to send the error data to
Micro$oft). After I select either 'Send' or 'Don't Send', Halo closes.
These things keep appearing.

I already tried reinstalling the game, and I have all of the latest Microsoft updates, driver updates (audio and video), Halo patch 1.031, tried different settings within the program, both audio and video, etc. Have AntiAliasing and Antrioscopic filtering off. I even got another drive and did a clean install of Windows XP (with nothing but the game/patches), patched, installed halo, patched, same damn thing!!
I've been to different forums here , and here , and it's a known issue...but no answers!! I saw something about a refresh issue, but no detail, although I don't know if that's MY issue.

Any info, links, etc. would be appreciated!

man, that game has just been hell all round. i used to be pretty apathetic about the console versus computer wars, but this one tipped the balance.

bsobel...and your point would be....? Nice thread crap!

Something wrong with 2 posts in two different forums? Actually, the question could fall into either category. I just wanted an answer. So, unless you have something constructive to contribute, keep your dumb a$$ comments to yourself:disgust:

The only thing that comes to mind is have your AGP aperture size to at least 128mb and disable fastwrites and 8x AGP support, and relax ram timings for troubleshooting purposes. Any chance you have a heat issue with the CPU or vid card, or that the ram is flakey? Are you overclocking? You could try memtest86 and Prime95 torture test and loop 3Dmock2k1se to make certain the system is solid if you have the slightest doubt. The fact that you tried it off a clean install makes it highly unlikely it's a software compatability issue so it would be great if you had extra components or a friend/relative with a system that you could swap out vid card and ram with so you can take those out of the mix.

Have had similar problems with Halo under different circumstances. I used to get "Gathering exception data" errors after choosing "Play" on the start screen about every other time. Sorry that I don't remember the details, but when I followed up on the error I was told my system was failing to initialize DirextX properly. I already had DX9.0b installed and dxdiag passed every time. I was told to reinstall DirectX, but didn't believe this was the root of the problem. My "work-around" was this: Load the CD and allow the start screen to come up, then close the start screen. Now that the CD is already loaded, the game can be started from the Start Menu bypassing the start screen. This worked for me and I never did identify the real problem, though it only happened to me on the first two versions and never on the last two version patches. Since the game is such a hog, I've found that manually stopping ALL unnecessary services before playing smoothed out gameplay. Don't lock your refresh rate before playing as you can choose the rate you want to use in the game's settings. Hope this helps some.
