I was pretty shocked to learn about the politics of the housing crisis:
* There are 17 million vacant homes in America
* Which equates to more than 30 empty homes for every American experiencing homelessness
Homeless people do not display the requisite behavior needed to own a house.
Since, after all, "owning" usually involves getting a mortgage and paying in a timely manner.
Quite a few homeless, however are already aware that rent can be avoided and damaging property is an appropriate way to create a prima facie case that they should not pay rent. All they need is a legally illiterate landlord who doesn't do inspection prior to move-in or during it. Or intentionally allow mold to develop somewhere in the house through lack of reasonable maintenance. Then then can claim a case of constructive eviction.
It is better to rent than to own because owners are presumed to have a juicy wad of money that the government can exert power over. Renters, however, have numerous de facto protections.
And the more adept even knows that they can enter a vacant house, take possession and occupy it, and then the slow eviction process is only way to get the squatter out.
