hard drive copy to laptop

I have a friend that needs a spare computer, as a backup. He has decided that he is going to buy a laptop. If I can, how is the best way to copy his harddrive from his desktop to the laptop. I need to use this as the operating system because he has some profesional programs that he cant afford to lose. He is using win98 on his desktop. Can I burn a hard drive image using ghost or some other software and use it "restore" the hard drive on the laptop? If so when it boots up will it just think that we changed the hardware and update for it? Any and all help will be appreciated.

Gotta be running FAT32 on the laptop...

You can backup his current PC as it is now by using Ghost or Drive Image, then you can burn the image files onto cd-rs. Then, you can restore this PC back to these images files.

Another option would be to get a spare HD, and clone or image his current PC's HD to this spare HD. Test the spare cloned HD to make sure it works correctly, THen remove the HD and put it in a safe place.

laptop and the pc has different mobo setup. so if u copy the exact pc hd's image to laptop's hd it wont work. its best to install fresh os on the laptop. then install and copy whatever program and data over.

Craming a desktop os image onto a laptop is not a good plan
