I seemed to have lost all the data on one of my harddrives. I believe the partition failed some read/write operation and when I restarted the computer, the file table got screwed up. The partition was a FAT32 that I was just using for data under WIN2K. Does anybody know some recovery methods? Or perhaps someplace where I can send the harddrive? I've tried restarting the computer to both Linux and Win2k to check. Under Linux, fdisk fails to read the volume. In partion magic in Win2k, the partition says 'check failed.' I'm at a loss. Any help please.

There used to be a great little program called Lost and Found. I think the company that put it out was called Powerquest but I'm not totally sure. Lost and found would find data on corrupted & formatted drives. The only problem is that they stop making it and actually gave it away...but now you can't get it anymore. There are some people that do have the install still...maybe they could help.
I wish I would've kept the download but I lost it on one of my drives when I had to do a reformat...

If you have another hard drive, use that and install a program called EasyRecovery from a company called OnTrack. You can download a demo if it which will show you the files it can retrieve. It can even retrieve the files if your partitions are all messed up or non existant. It scans every sector on your hard drive and can copy the files to a new drive, which you can then copy back to the drive after you repartition and/or reformat.

Here is the link for Easy Recovery from Ontrack

If the data is that critical, you will have to pay for it. Luckily, the drive was formatted to FAT32. If you can load the program on a drive that is running Windows 98 or ME, then you can use the personal edition for $179. If it's under 2000, then you have to get the pro version for like $489. If you have to buy it, I would call them up and check if you can use the personal edition. I believe that you can use the personal edition on Windows 2000, it's just that you need the pro version to recover data from NTFS partitions. Call and check.
