Hard Drive, dead?

My computer has decided not to boot into Windows XP anymore. It is detected in the BIOs, but if you try to boot Windows on it in ANY mode it just restarts. I've tried formatting and it's just stuck at 0%. I've tried to recover the files, but it can't write them (well 2% of them). What's wrong?

It spins up but it makes a god awful sound...

in that case say good bye, cause she is on her way out. if you have another machine you could throw it in try to freeze it. then set as slave on another machine and see if you can get you data.
