If it is Maxtor, I'm sure they screwed something up. They're not the kind of company that makes a great product every-so-often, practically all of their crap since 2000 has been pretty shitty. Talk to anyone that has a Dell Dimension ordered for Home (opposed to office) and they'll tell you they've had their HD replaced. This is because Dell and Maxtor had an exclusive contract through 2003 and most of 2004, leaking almost 700,000 crappy Maxtor drives into home model Dimensions.
Over at SR, the failure rate on the 740dx (series 6) maxtor ATA drives is 30% after 1 year of service. Yes, almost 1/3 of these drives fail.
Are there people who get lucky with Maxtor? Probably. Will you be one of them? Don't bet on it.
