Hard drive doesn't show max space!

I bought a Maxtor 40gb 7200rpm drive and used Powerquest drive copy to copy the 8gb western digigtal drive to the Maxtor 40gb. Everything works okay but when you go to disk properties it only shows the drive as a 34gb and not 40gb. I have a cusl2 mobo and p3 733 processor and windows 98 2nd edition upgrade. Does anyone have any ideas how to get the full 40gb of disk? Thank you!

Did you check to see if there was any free space on it?

40GB in MarketSpeak(TM) = 40,000,000,000 bytes.

40,000,000,000 bytes in The Real World(TM)= 37.25 GBytes (40,000,000,000/1024/1024/1024).

Add in filesystem overhead and such, and 34GBytes isn't TOO far off (sounds a bit off though). Make sure the HD doesn't have some sort of compatibility jumper mode or anything, and see if it's recognized as the right size in BIOS and in FDISK.

I went into Fdisk and there appeared to be three drives in the select drive menu, but it would only let you view 1 or 2 drive. I have two drives in the system. When i selected the 40gb maxtor this is what it showed:
Partition=1
status=A
type=Non Dos
Volume label=(was blank)
Mbytes= -325
System=98
usage=8
Total disk space is -264 Mbytes (1 Mbyte=1048576 bytes)

Ive never seen anything like this before! Any ideas? Again, thanks for your quick and courteous respnses!

hmm, what translation mode is it using? LBA right?

before u make any changes, make sure u have a backup of your data

i wonder whether the partition was copied correctly. Norton DiskDoctor does a decent job of repairing errors, but make sure u know what u r answering "yes" to before u click "yes" (if u r not sure, click "no&quot. on a large hdd such as 40GB, it can become confused and corrupt a functioning partition

u might be able to chance using scandisk, but it doesn't give u the control that ndd does, so if it screws up, u can only blame MS

I was able to get it fixed with powerquest drivecopy. My friend looked at it and said he had the same problem. Sometimes drivecopy dosent copy the partition right from what i understand.
