This $24.99 (reg $49.99) MegaVault 3.5 inch Aluminum USB MD-EN350USB2.

If you don't mind rebates, you might want to wait since, according to a thread at FW, this is going to be $14.99 ARat Circuit City starting 2/05.

Thanks for the heads up allisolm.

Anyone with any experience on these? Will they be able to handle a large (300 gig or more) hard drive without excessive heat? I'm planning to store data files on it.

I got one of these early in the week. The IDE cable broke when back for another one and my machine won't recognize it. Went to another machine and it gave me all kinds of issues.

Look out for the rebate, if it's being paid by MadDog themselves it's almost good as gone. I hope it's a CC rebate.

I've gotten rebates back from MadDog before. Took a while (which ones don't?), but I did receive it.

If you're using XP use Computer Management's "Disk Management" function, convert the drive to NTFS (the drive will show there even if windows doesn't see it) and then mark that partition or partitions as ACTIVE from within the Disk Management tool as well. That will get you going.

for any one who bought this... whats the power connector look like.
i bought a couple bytecc enclosures and the biggest problem is that multi-pin power connecter never gives me consistant power.

They have a bunch of Compusa stuff on clearance at the store I was at. I just grabbed a clearance 'compusa' brand USB Enclosure SKU 333112 yesterday. Was $17.88 for USB 2.0 w/ 400GB drive support (about 50% off). Tried to use it with the included stuff and it would detect the USB Device but wouldn't detect what type of device it was, or the drive in it, etc (tried on 3 different systems). Thought I was going to have to return it, but when I got home and had some time to further diagnose it was the included USB Cable that was the problem, using another cable I have it works fine on multiple machines. The enclosure doesn't have a fan so, if it's something you want to use all the time better off spending a bit more for a nicer one.

Anyway, take a look at the clearance section in the store, I also picked up a 2x 9dbi (18" each = freakin huge) Compusa brand (Omni) antennae set SKU 316832 that works on linksys WRTxxx routers (TNC Connection) for $19.88. Considering the linksys brand 7DBi model is like $50-60 I figured it was worth trying out but I haven't yet...

This was Deerfield Beach, FL store and they were the last of each of the items there. The price had to be manually input at the register (mgr override). I'm guessing these were returns but the USB drive looked sealed. As with any clearance deal, YMMV.

I purchaed one of the Mad Dog combo (USB 2.0 and Firewire) enclosures a few weeks ago when they had their half price sale ($30). I installed a 250GB Hitachi drive ($50 at Fry's AR).

It works great for an external drive. I ran the Sandra benchmark and got 36MB/s on firewire and 28MB/s on USB 2.0. I made sure to use a USB channel that was not shared with another USB device.

I was very surprised to see that much more throughput on the firewire channel.

Have one, will work fine up to 400 gig. I don't see heat as an issue with it.

I dont think there's a 400 gig barrier. If it says that it works up to 400 gigs that was only the largest hdd on the market at the time
