Why is my maxtor 250 gigabyte hard drive registering as 130 in windows after a clean install...

Install Service Pack 2. It enables 48-bit LBA, which let's your machine be able to address more than 130-ish gb.

You may still need to enable 48-bit LBA, even after you have installed SP2. If you do, get the program from maxtor. It works with any HDD, not just maxtor.
