Hard drive goes *click* *click*

I did a bad thing.
My computer fell the other day, and my 40 gig HD is now trash I think.
All it does it click.
The PC will not recognize it, so I can't even try to use programs to get info off of it.

Someone suggested that the head might have fallen off the side of the platter and gotten stuck.
I know that opening it will most likely ruin it completely, but a friend told me it might work long enough to get some info off of it.
Well I took the cover off, but the head was not stuck.
I plugged it in and watched the head.
The clicking noise was from when the head would move all the way back and forth across the platters.

I put the top back on it and closed it up.

Is it trash, or is there some way to replair the head assembly or anything?

It's now trash, throw it away and get a new drive.

Opening it up definetly trashed it, you could have tried the freezer trick, but i dont think that will help now, time for a new drive

I thought about the freezer trick, but I didn't think that would help drives that had been dropped.
Was thinking about taking it back to the clean room I used to work at and opening it. I am sure my old boss would have let me, but I decided that since it was probably trashed already anyways I would just have a look.

Yup it's trashed. If you had valuable data on it you might be able to send it to one of those data recovery places, but I'm not sure if even they could help since you opened it up.
