HARD DRIVE MAKING GRINDING NOISES!!

Ok, I was playing Day of Defeat earlier today, and our power goes out, and i heard this big explosion outside of my house, so i thought "no biggie, this isnt the first time the powers gone, never heard that explosion before though"

So after waiting for a few hours, the power is back online "great" i thought, now to get back to business. The computer posts just fine, I'm dual booting with win2k pro and 98se. I usually go into win2k because thats my preference. It stats going into the OS and all of a sudden, nothing responds, and it reboots, i then notice that it cant find the primary master anymore (the HD), so i turn off my computer, leave it for a few seconds, then turn it back on. It posts fine and starts going into win2k again, it does its business with checkdisk, then all of a sudden i hear these grinding noises coming from the machine, and i hear the CPU fan go into standby mode, and then it reboots.

I dont remember what exact model my HD is, but its an IBM 45GB drive.

Would the power blackout have anything to do with this? i have a pretty good surge protector, do you think it failed on me?

If you want my full specs pls let me know, also, if the surge protector failed on me, should i take it up with the store i got it from?

what surge protector do you have, im afraid talking to the store or even the surge protector manuf. will be useless, they wont care .. do you have warranty on ur parts (though power outage problems are not usually covered in warranties, you simply say "the device has failed") .. oh ya as you can see, i think yes its to do with the power outage .. i suggest getting a more heavy duty UPC ( uninteruptible power supply) , preferably one made by APC .. especially since it seems that power outages are frequent .. immediately though, backup your data .. good luck ..

Playing Day of Defeat and explosions going off in the neighborhood? Sounds like you're in Tora Bora.

But anyway... The power outage probably hosed the system, but try proving that in court, or to the people who sold you the surge protector. (Tip: Use a battery backup instead of a surge protector. A 600 volt ACP is well worth the $150)

The first thing I would check is the BIOS settings. Make sure that the BIOS can recognize the drive. If it can't see it at all or reports the wrong drive model that's usually a sign that the electronics on the drive are malfunctioning.

Next up would be to boot with a DOS diskette and run CHKDSK on the drive.

If the drive is grinding its probably about to give it up..I had an IBM 20gig do that very recently..If its noisy I'd opt for a replacement
one from IBM..you can go to IBM page input your serial # and find out if its still under warranty and get an RMA there..regardless
of where you bought it after 30days you have to go through IBM..

You had better backup any files you want to keep really quick as your hard drive is probably ready to die. So get those letters and porno sights backed up before it dies.

Im on another comp right now, and the software is running *crosses fingers*

the amazing thing is that i reformatted and reinstalled etc about 2 days ago, so all my stuff is backed up already on another computer

Grab a new drive and your copy of Ghost before your old drive gives up it's own. Be prepared for the immoratl words, It's dead, Jim.

When it comes to hard drives, quiet = good. Noise = bad.

well, the software is fixing the HD, and its gone quiet again.....

Any idea what in the hell just happend? bad sector?

i did plan on getting a new HD anyway, so i guess im going to have to see how things work out...

My IBM 40gb 60GXP has started grinding at me rectently. Just yesterday my computer froze while my sister was using it, she rebooted and asked me to look at it, my BIOS said that imminent failure was detected. So it will die soon, I've already started backing up. First and last IBM drive I buy.

DUDE IF YOU HAVE A 45 GIG then It's the illfated GXP75 and It is more than likely to fail, TRUST ME. My roomate went through 4 of them last year and I myself still have the origional (hasn't died yet ) but it has made the grinding noise, after which about 50% of my files got corrupted and I had to do some major repairs and the drive seems ok again... but these drives have over a 60% chance of failure and IBM is facing a class action lawsuit over these drives, search around on these boards, it's actually funny how many people talk about these drives and their demise, it's become almost ritual

Welcome to the 75GXP club. Call up IBM, ask for an RMA. Tell them to send you a 60GXP rather than another 75GXP, and don't take no for an answer. If they give you trouble, share the information contained in RazeOrc's post with them, and see if that makes a difference. If they won't give you anything but another 75GXP, take it, ebay it while it works, and buy yourself a reliable drive.

well, everything seems to be fine now thanks to that software, but if theres so much as a peep from this thing again, I'm going to give IBM absolute hell.

Copy the stuff you don't want to lose. Don't put it off.

BTW, I've got two WD 27.3GB Experts, RAIDed 0.
I've heard a slight "clicking" coming from my case before. After that the thing locks hard. I can reset and get it back up. I realize one of my drives is about to go. By having them RAIDed, do I just have to wait until one goes bad, to find out which one it is?
The thing's only done it 2 or 3 times on me. I've burned my data and am holding on. Should I just go ahead and separate them, reformat each of them and run some kind of stress test on them?
