Hi, I am experiencing a strange symptom with my IDE hard drive in Windows 2000. I have my system configured like this:
Primary Master: C: -> ~15GB partition on IBM 45GB (Deskstar 75GXP)
Primary Slave: D: -> WD 20.5GB (7200 rpm, not sure on the model number)
Secondary Slave: F: -> ~30GB partition on IBM 45GB
Either way, WD is "disappearing" on me, this has happened twice so far. Each time it disappears, my computer freezes for awhile, then the Unplug Device window pops up, same dialogue box as my USB compactflash card reader when I unplug the compactflash card. And after that pops up, my D: disappears and I can't access it, but the computer still works fine.... I found that curious because I thought IDE drives are not hot swappable, and either way it shouldn't have come unplugged.... the first time I wasn't sure so I opened my computer to make sure nothing was loose (didn't notice anything) and turned it back on and it worked fine.... a few weeks later, it happened again, but I remembered about last time so I didn't waste time in opening it up.. I just shut it down, and then turned it back on... it didn't work at first, but after a few cycles my BIOS detected it and everythings back to normal. I'm just wondering if my drive is exhibiting signs of failure or eminent doom? It makes strange sounds I think, kind of like its spinning up and then spinning down and back up and back down, even though I'm not accessing it... and I *think* some of my files are becoming corrupted.... like on winamp, a few MP3 files when I try to play, winamp tells me "Fatal error/data corrupt" or something like that... Okay another strange phenomenon I tried to get that same message, but the MP3 works fine now????? What is up with my drive? I used Norton Disk Doctor on it and didn't find anything wrong...
Please help!
Thanks,
