Hard drive rattles when shaken

I have a harddrive that seems to work but when you pick it up and gently shake it, it sounds like something on the inside is broken (ie. you hear a rattle). The drive seems to work fine. Is this something that indicates you should not trust the drive - or do some just rattle?

i like maracas but cant afford any... or I just picked up the drive and heard it so i shook it a little to see if I could hear it again

is this an IBM 2.5" laptop drive? if so, thats normal. if not, stop it!

no, its a maxtor 3.5" - yes yes i'll stop it, but do i need to worry that the drive is going to break soon?

I would make sure you have what you need backed up.

Nothing in a computer should rattle, and nothing in a computer should be shaken!

Shake it all you want.

Computers and Hard Drives are shipped all the time. Lots of shaking going on during transport.

Having said that, I've never heard a rattle in a HD when it's shaken. Run the manufacturers diagnostic on it and see what it tells you.
