I have 3 WD special edition drives. 2 120 gig storage drives and a 40 gig boot drive. Strangely, the 40 gig one runs really hot, but the 120 gig ones manage to stay quite cool. Is this because I have the OS running? Any ideas?
The 40 gig runs hotter then the 120 because of the Technology. How mich I wouldn't know but check some StorageReview.com and if the 40 Gig is above the 120's then of course Heat Rises. Also if the OS is constantly tasking then YES it would be another reason.
But the 40 gig has one platter and the 120 gig has 3 platters. The 40 gig is actually below the 120s so its not the rising heat. I am asking because if there is a problem (ie: the drive is slowly cooking itself) i want to RMA it asap.
It is more than likely a result of the 40 gig drive having more activity than the 120's. Try SpeedFan to see what the actual drive temps are, and then go to the WD site and see what the environmental specs are for your particular model (ie. max temp)
