Hard drive won't cold boot - sometimes

I've got a Fujitsu 30 gig hard drive that recently developed a weird habit If the computer has been turned off for at least a few hours, the drive is recognized in the BIOS and everything boots up fine abd the drive works perfectly. If, however, the computer has been shut down recently, a cold boot will result with the BIOS not recognizing the existence of the drive at all. It sounds like it would be a cooling issue, but there's plenty of space around the drive and the drive is cool to the touch. Warm reboots after a successful boot are not a problem - the drive is recognized every time. Warm boots after the drive is not recognized results in the drive not being recognized again. I've tried the drive in other systems, and with other power supplies, and nothing changes this pattern. Anyone got any ideas? :frown:

Just leave it running; pick something from a variety of the Distributed Computing projects that Anandtech is participating in and get involved!

Okay, so that doesn't solve the underlying issue, but it is a creative suggestion.

Hard drive is going bad. Return it and get another.
