hard drives: fastest and quietest

ok, just got me a raid card and i wanna buy hard drives in pairs. so which hard drive of the ATA/100 and 7200 rpm class is quietest? IBM, Maxtor, Quantum, Seagate, Western Digital? my seagate sounds like a jet taking off, my maxtor is a tad better, western digital was ok before, and never used a quantum or a IBM. i poked around tom's hardware and didn't see an article comparing this new class of HDs, and thought someone had some feedback or a link to a particularly good article.

I'm partial to my IBM 75GXP but the maxtors are right up there too

i'll second that. my IBM 75gxp is a beautiful piece of hardware. I also run some maxtor drives that haven't let me down. and all of them are respectably quiet.

IBMs are quiet but I think Maxtor has a slight edge on noise. I favor IBM durability, but the GXP has not held to tradition in that area as well as thier past drives. They may have that ironed out by now.

I can't hear my 75gxp over the fans - quietest HD I've used. IMO, these drives live up to the hype.

The Maxtors are good, but the IBM GXP family are, in my opinion, simply better. Winbench99 tells me that my 4x45GB Raid 0+1 array (KT7 Raid, HighPoint 370 controller) has a max transfer rate of just over 77MB/sec and a min of just a tad under 36MB/sec - can't argue with that, I think. The GXPs can also be set to quiet operation, which reduces noise, while also reducing transfer speeds somewhat. Not really an issue, I think, as the only noise I ever hear are from my fans. Go with the GXPs!!!

i've owned quantum, western digital, and maxtor, and i think the maxtor are the loudest. i have 2 7200 maxtors, along with 4 5400 rpm maxtors, and i get a whine out of all of them, not real loud, but noticeable....

I own both IBM 75GXP and Maxtor. IBM is faster, but Maxtor is definitly quieter.
