Harddrive Help, wont work

My harddrive for backign up stuff was working fine until yesterday. Under Winxp and vista, it is recognized as local disk (G, but theres no capacity next to it. When i look at the properties of the disk it says that the file system is : RAW rather than NTFS.

Im not sure what happened. Error says G:/ is not accessible . THe file or directory is corrupted or unreadable.

Is there anyway to fix this? IF not, is there anyway to retreive the data before i trash the drive?

I think that something corrupted the file system on the drive. You might be able to get the data off. Once you have the data backed up(hopefully), you have to go into "computer management" and set the partition and format the drive.

How do i get the data off? I know how to format a drive.. that wasnt really the question.

Right about now, is the time to look for some data recovery programs. There's about a zillion of 'um, and I have yet to find one that works in every situation. Download the trial of GetDataBack, and see if it can find your files.

Hmm old post , but it seemed to have happened again with another drive I have. I do not remember what program i used to rebuild the index, anyone have any ideas

If you can't find something to get the data before the format, you can always to a format "Q" which basically doesn't erase anything just makes the drive available to write to. So you could reformat (using Q) then go in and get your data back.

Format C:\ /q

The 'C:' is the drive letter and the '\q' means quick - it only takes a few
seconds as opposed to 5 minutes! The short time is because it is not "erasing" the contents of the drive.

Thanks Dex. Someone here has to know of a free program that rebuilds your index. I used the program in the past, but I cannot find it. I don't have physical damage to the drive, so my problem just requires rebuilding the index. The data is there, the drive just lost its partition information and where each file is located. If anyone can help me out I would GREATLY appreciate it! Getdataback can do the job, but it costs $70, and only allows transferring of files to another drive. The program i used in the past rebuilt the index and I was good to go w/ the same exact drive. (I will eventually buy a new drive and transfer the data over).
