I had the same question before I built my first. Read everyting for a month and talked to everyone I could. I guy at PC Club finally convinced me. He said during school he and his cohorts tried to break the Seagates and couldn't. All the Maxtor stuff I've read is overwhelmingly bad news.

definitely bad news.. stay away as far as possible!!!
Seagate definitely make the best consumer drives no doubt at all.

Yeah, I'd pick the Seagate in a second. Never really been a big fan of Maxtor, don't think that I've ever owned a drive from them that didn't go bad eventually, although, I admit the 120MB drive I had died due to my own influence. (Yes, MB, not GB. If I hadn't accidentally killed it, it probably would have lived forever.)

But 1-year warranties on drives that are rumored to have a higher-than-industry-average RMA/defect rate, doesn't entice me. 5-year warranties on drives that are known to be fairly reliable, do.

Thanks for all your opinions. I was leaning for the 200GB, but was being put off by the 50GB extra and cheaper price. I just ordered the 200GB Seagate, and actually, if it does come, am getting it for .54/GB. Not bad I think, hopefully buy.com will send it Otherwise newegg has the same drive for around .60/GB
