This has appeared on a computer here. I clicked on selective setup in MSCONFIG and told it not to run.

I rebooted and the ptsnoop.exe reinstated itself to be ran.

I have read mix things about this being a virus.....

If anyone can shed any light, let me know.

Hmm, there seems to be alot of mixed opinions about this.
Virus scans have been detecting it as a virus on accasion.

I know there is a normal file called ptsnoop but my geuss is that
has also been a virus created using the same name. That is my theory.
I formatted everything and the problem has gone away. (Simply reintalling win98 did not solve the problem, only via hard drive formatting did it become resolved)

Zoltar is correct, it's harmless. It's just a program that dial-up modems use. They could have chosen a better name though. I thought it was something 'funny' too when I first found it.

But what about the fact that I go into MSconfig, unclick it and upon next reboot and has itself reclicked and recreated in the msconfig setup. I have never seen any other program do that before.

It is unremovable. That doesn't seem right, And i have read articles
that people have tweaked this program to create a trojan virus to be present.

And it wasn't there in the beginning...... which really perplexes
me.

I did check that link, and I checked those areas and they were already clean. That article is almost 2 years old as well. I am pretty sure it can be a virus.

Its not a virus.
I had it on my 98 systems as well.
If you MSCONFIG is not keeping the settings you took, it could be registry problems in windows.
What kind of modem do you have?
If you think its a virus, have you bothered to do, well, mabey, a virus scan??

Yep, it is included in the drivers for my Pctel HSP Micromodem. Norton indicated it was infected one day, so I deleted it. I was using an external modem by then anyway so I never checked to see if its absence would disable the Pctel modem.
