I had some spare time to kill and played for a couple hours yesterday for free on my tablet because I wanted to see what all the buzz was about. For anyone who doesn't know, Among Us is a two-dimensional overhead view 3rd person multiplayer game where there are 10 people on a spaceship assigned to complete different repair tasks. There is one "impostor" on the ship who is trying to sabotage the ship or kill all the crew members one at a time. The crew must complete its tasks before the ship is sabotaged or before the impostor kills everyone. The crew cannot communicate with one another during the game, except during emergency meeting times. Any crew member can call an emergency meeting if they discover a dead body. Once an emergency meeting is called people can use a group chat to say who they think the imposter is, and then there is a round of voting where people vote to kick out the impostor. The person receiving the majority of the votes at the meeting is kicked off the ship and then you are told whether it was the impostor or not. If it was the impostor, the crew wins. If not, that crewmate is gone for good and the game resumes until another murder or sabotage happens.
Anyway the game has become extremely popular due to people streaming it on Twitch. In fact it had the most number of users online of any Steam game ever at one point. Well I downloaded and fired it up. It was OK but not nearly as engaging or fun as the internet led me to believe. Seemed like playing mostly with 12 year old kids who could barely type coherent phrases. At one point I played in a game where the admin renamed everyone to N***** lover 1, N lover 2, N lover 3 etc. Lots of crewmates trolling and not completing their tasks so as to prohibit a crew from winning, or purposefully calling emergency meetings just to irritate everyone else and waste resources, or purposefully not voting so that everyone who did vote would have to sit and watch the vote countdown timer expire to zero. That was the point where I determined it wasn't worth my time.
