Again: I don't expect anything, not even that Haswell refresh-K models will be released.

Pheesh seems to do so based on an unknown source quoted in post 32. Shintai rightly questions that source because all others indicate it will be Broadwell-K. But he also says: suppose HWR-K is released it won't offer much over HW-K. To which Pheesh replies: that's just an assumption, implying in fact it will offer much. Now maybe he considers 100MHz as 'much' but I don't.

Intel will release about 20 new processors for its Haswell Refresh platform in the second quarter including Core i7-4790, Core i5-4690, Core i5-4590, Core i3-4360, Pentium G3450 and Celeron G1840 and low-power Core i7-4790S, Core i5-4590S and Core i3-4150T.

Intel will then release its Haswell Refresh K series and Haswell-E in the third quarter and phase out its Core i5-3350P, Core i3-3225 and Core i3-3210 processors in the first quarter.

Ok, source is known now. But is it credible? Because if it is it collides with other info: Z97 2014, Skylake 2015. So like Shintai already said: where does Broadwell-K fit in? Or maybe it's a typo and they actually mean BW-K instead of HW-K.

Normally new chipset generations are released together with new CPU generations. I wonder if Broadwell originally was intended to be released together with the 9 series chipset in Q2 2014. But since Broadwell & 14 nm has been delayed, they invented "Haswell Refresh" to push out the 9 series chipset together with a ridiculous 100 MHz speedbin of Haswell.

^ One of those is a standard Intel roadmap which shoes the k series being refreshed, the other is from vr-zone, which puts out fake slides for GPUs.

Really all I'd like to know (confirmed from a reputable source, or even better, Intel), is that existing Z87 boards will support Haswell - Broadwell, or if Z97 boards are needed to support Haswell - Broadwell. People keeping their systems for long periods of time and wishing to upgrade to a better CPU far down the road would be aided by this information.

It depends on the mobo, not the chipset. There is a slight power change with Broadwell. Nothing to do with the chipset. So the answer is simply maybe. These specs have been out for atleast the last 6 months.

Remember Broadwell was never intended originally for the desktop. Only mobile and E3 Xeons.

Personally,I can't expect more than a 100MHz speed increase and maybe chips that are binned higher,so we may also see better overclocks.Again, that's wishful speculation on my part,I have no source.Realistically I expect nothing but the same as current Haswells offer.

Also, seeing as this is Intel, for some reason I doubt they will make any CPU backwards compatible. The 4790k (If such a thing exists) may be only a 4770k with 100MHz higher clocks and a new name, and they could still deem it incompatible with current socker 1150 motherboards. That's one of the reasons I don't like Intel.Shame they are the only ones offering decent performance right now...

As far that I know with all the info released so far, is that Haswell refresh are just new models based on Haswell (Could even be the same actual silicon, not even a new Stepping or Revision). This was related to some business strategy of Intel that instead of lowering the price of older models, they phased them out and introduced a slighty faster model at the same price as replacements.

So you're saying a mobo manufacturer could in fact produce a mobo that would support existing Haswell, and also Haswell refresh and Broadwell CPUs, but using the existing Z87 chipset?

Yes.

Haswell and Haswell Refresh is exactly the same. Thats just a BIOS update at worst.

Hmm, so I assume you don't think there will be a Broadwell-K?

This is also from VR-zone, but now it doesn't show Broadwell-K: http://vr-zone.com/articles/whats-intel-planning-2014/72100.html

Will there even be any Broadwell desktop cpu's? Or will they slow down the tick-tock and move Skylake to 2016?

Haswell Refresh will be more than a 100mhz bump, looks like we were all wrong!

I don't disagree with you,but it will overclock at least somewhat. Most chips will do at least 4.2GHz.You just need a decent (Not really expensive) cooler to keep the temperatures down. That's a healthy boost in my book.

Then there are those whose chips clock like there is no tomorrow.Balla comes to mind.I wish I get a CPU that does at least 4.6GHz...
4.2 is a joke though as that is worse than any Sandy Bridge could oc to. so basically what little IPC improvement there was is not fully realized since the typical Haswell will oc 200-300 mhz less than the typical Sandy Bridge which many are wanting to upgrade from.
