So sorry to be adding to the "what's the best" archives.

If you have an opinion you're willing to share it would be appreciated.

If I go non-SLI, I am interested in opinions of the ASUS A8N-E vs. the ABit AN8
If I go with SLI, I am interested in opinions of the ASUS A8N-SLI vs. the ABit AN8-SLI

(I overclock, but not for absolute extremes... Stability and BIOS ease/functionality are of the most importance to me. Also I am hoping for a MoBo that is not overly picky about what RAM I use.)

I would go with ASUS. I have had a lot of problems with boards being DOA from them over the last few months. ASUS has a longer and easier warranty too. Never had a DOA asus board. KN9-SLI came DOA, GD8-Pro came doa, a few others too, I just stopped using them at this point. They used to be my favorite too. Just my 2 cents.

Abit has a 3 year warranty, I don't believe that Asus' is any longer?

As for the OP's questions it depends exactly which version of the AN8 (AN8, AN8-V, AN8 V2.0, AN8 Ultra) you are looking at/can find (probably not too many around as they stopped making them nearly a year ago).

I haven't had much difficulty finding the older ABit boards. (just a hard time finding a positive review)

My last ABit was a KD7-Raid and several other models before that. I loved them! so it's not been easy seeing such a slide in confidence about their stuff.

Why not an AM2 board? Abit An9 nf4 ultra for example (not suggesting it by the way just asking)

That's a good question.

I guess I should have pointed out that it's a very stout PC I'm dealing with. I just don't like my present motherboard and am replacing it.

Well, from what I'm seeing in reviews the so called professionals are using the M2N32-SLI mobos for comparison benches. Might want to look into it. It seems pretty popular.

The above post means I wouldn't want a motherboard that required replacing my RAM (or any other components)

Abit: The first 2 years parts and labor is free and on the 3rd year parts is free but labor is $25.00

ASUS: 3 Year Parts + Labor, less of a hassle to RMA. In the last 3 years, I have sold no less than 500 ABIT motherboards. I didn't start seeing a problem until about 1 year ago, where I started getting DOA boards, boards would die after month or two etc... Went to ASUS no problems anymore. Every now and again I will sell an abit board, but the second to last one I ordered was DOA.

i avoid asus as they have a policy of providing no support for linux.
