Having problem with my PC speakers.

Hello all. I have a set of old Logitech Z680 5.1 PC speakers with a minor problem. I have tried this with two different computers and sound cards: Audigy 2 and X-FI Extreme Gamer. When I use Creative's diagnostics I only get sound through 2 speakers. But when I play a movie, game, or TV the sound plays normally. It never used to do this. I am a little worried this is a sign of impending failure of the speakers. What do ya'll think?

Sounds more like something fishy with Creative's diagnostics or perhaps your connections.

The only way you see "impending failure" in speakers is if the cone material is beginning to rot. The speakers would still play though the sound quality would suffer. This is not your problem.

PC speakers have built-in amplifiers (6 for a 5.1 system) and they generally work or don't work. If you are losing rear and center (and perhaps the subwoofer) with the diagnostics, that would mean 3 (or 4) amps died at the same time - not going to happen.

There could be an issue with multichannel decoding, but if your speaker system works normally, this is not an issue. Your speakers are probably fine.

Software issue. Logitechs software tends to have problems (setpoint for my MX Revolution makes it jump and freeze....So it's not installed right now). Overall, you probably have nothing to worry about.
