Having problems with shares.

Hey all,

I need to share 2 folders.

One must be available to everyone - Full Access.

The other I need to be restricted to certain users.

So I tried to enable advanced file sharing in Windows XP Pro, and making the full access folder available to 'Everyone' which works fine.

Now I made a new user called 'Elite' and gave it a password '123'. I set the restricted folder to allow access to this user. Problem is, when someone tries to access my pc they can get into the Full access folder, but when trying to get into the restricted one it says that you don?t have the privileges. (doesn?t prompt for the User Name + Password)

Anyone know how I can sort this out?

Is it possible to maybe include the username and password in the address bar or something? like \\HomePC:Username,Password\Share1?

Please help.

One possible workaround is to encript the folder you don't care to share---with the unlock key available to those PC's that have your permission---and no such key available
to computers you want to restrict access to---they may still be able to get the file---but will not be able to read it unless they have some pretty good codebreaking skills.

I was hoping that someone would be able to assist me purely with the sharing prob. If no-one else knows, then Ill definitly use ur suggestion.

I am sure no sharing expert---many here are far far more expert--but that workaround occured to me--but hopefully someone can give you better advice
more in line with just sharing.

try rebooting the client, and connect to the protected share first.

Also, turn of simple file sharing on the client.

You didn't say whether you have XP Professional set for "Simple File Sharing" or not.

First, verify that you've set up your Sharing and Security settings properly.

To specify network User-specific access to a folder in a non-Domain network:
1) Put the files on an XP Professional computer with "Simple File Sharing" turned OFF.
2) Create a User Account for the "visitor" on the host XP Professional computer.
3) Right-click on the folder you want to share.
4) In the "Sharing" settings panel, set it to "Share this Folder" and set the Permissions to "Everyone", Full Control.
5) In the "Security" settings panel, add the desired User Account and its Permissions as appropriate.
