What is the benefit of getting HBO through prime? Seems like its the same price as HBO Now standalone.

The benefit for me is that I already have Prime and don't have to deal with extra crap apps or phone bullshit. My TV has HBO GO, but, well, of course that doesn't work.

Watched all 3 available episodes. Wow.

yeah seriously. Just finished the 2nd episode a little while ago and as brilliant as this is, it's very hard to watch. "fuck this show!" I actually said out loud. Can't wait to watch the next one and bathe myself in misery.

Been watching since the premiere and its riveting and horrifying. I know a fair bit about the event itself but the dramatization is just like a series of gut punches. While I was intellectually aware of what happens when a person takes a dose of radiation many (or many, many, many, many) times above fatal exposure to see it depicted so vividly is another matter entirely.

Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgard are phenomenal.

Yeah Harris and Skarsgard are very good, as expected. This series is killin it; I really look forward to each new episode on Mondays. Only six episodes though.

The postulated causes of the accident have evolved somewhat over the years. I don't know which version is portrayed in this series, but afaik, the most recent body of thought virtually exonerates the operators and instead blames a confluence of factors and events, all stemming from a design flaw called "positive void coefficient," which, while not technically described as making the reactor inherently unstable, gave it potentially dangerous idiosyncrasies of which the operators were entirely unaware, due to the way state secrets were handled at that time in the USSR.

There are still 10 RBMK reactors in operation as of this day...

which is fine, really. unless you're one of those masochists that likes to shower in this kind of misery every week.

There is certainly an argument to be made that the lack of experience and knowledge at the plant level was a major factor in the disaster, some of that appears to have been deliberately withheld but that they violated operating procedures and disabled several critical safety systems to proceed with their ill designed "test" gets them some culpability. When you start manually turning off stuff that would scram the reactor you're accepting responsibility for whatever happens.

I guess I could be in the masochist group. It's a good show so I want MOAR of it, despite it being pretty harsh. Four moar days until new episode WOOT

I find it amusing watching Harris who played one my favorite characters in Mad Men as a Brit and Skarsgard who was Gregor in Ronin somehow pull it off chemistry wise after a couple episodes.

Its been a great (but difficult) series to watch. Episode 4 was a particular punch to the gut. This miniseries is really well done. I can't wait for the last episodes coming up though.

This is one of those things:

If you don't like this show: You are a boring, inhuman waste of carbon.

If you hate this show (what it does to you): You get it.

If you can't watch anything without 1 or two extra devices next to you checking your facebook or newsfeeds or whatever internet things are happening, then fuck you. Don't even try this show because you will be angry, but only because you are too fucking brainless to try. Seriously: just fuck you.

yeah it's quite interesting. I'm not sure if that was actually known at the time regarding the RBMK reactors, or it was something that was theorized much later. It's problematic because of the USSR and their very un-German like lack of discipline regarding records. ...one thing you can count on Germans for: regardless of their turn towards despotism or genocide or the worst of everything: they will keep perfect records. No matter what.

I think it's perfectly possible that Lenasov [sic] and the character played by Emily Watson were/became aware of this positive void coefficient problem at the time, but is that actually true? I don't know enough about that and if the records of the time really do show this (do the records exist or, at the very least, show that it was possible that the state knew about it?). For now, it presents to me the kind of bastardized history that Braveheart presented: Let's take a dude that very little information exists, except from the people that massacred him...and write a Hollywood story that shows him less-massacre-able, because Academy Awards.

But of course Russian physicists are smart motherfuckers. It's a brilliant country filled with endlessly brilliant people that, often find themselves fighting against a state that simply doesn't want them to function. So, it's absolutely entirely possible that if anyone knew about these faults, there were some head atomic physicists in the USSR at the time that were far more capable than most of understanding this problem.

I love those coal miners. The head miner is such a total BA rofl. Then they were all doing it nekkid haha.

Apparently, that's just Hollywood fiction, as was the character portrayed by Emily Watson.

Partially, the report was that many were undressed maybe just to the underwear. And Watson's character is a collage of many.

Listen to the podcast for each episode comparing real life with the story in the mini series. 6 parts.

Thanks, I'll have to watch those.

The last one was hard to watch, shooting dogs, man! I know that's what they did and I understand the drama but it sucks.
