I'm sorry that I have failed to encourage you to enlighten yourself beyond the superficial accounts. It's my fault for not being persuasive. Even though you already admitted you had never heard of Mayak, which means you really know nothing about the history of nuclear research in the former USSR, your curiosity was not ignited. So, I capitulate. It was the worker's fault.
eh, your sarcasm is absurd. If you think the extremely extensive Wikipedia treatment is "superficial," you are free to correct it. Wikipedia works like that.

I wasn't being sarcastic. I'm not here to argue just to argue. I'm here for the productive exchange of opinions and ideas. While I respect Wikipedia as a source of knowledge ( I have gotten lost in it for countless hours) the lack of curiosity that some of my interlocutors display is disheartening. I've enjoyed a lot of your posts, and I don't like being in the position of opposing you when all I wanted to do was chat about an interesting topic. This used to be more often possible in the message boards I remember from my youth, but it's simply a vanishing idea in today's climate. A shame, really.

Let me reiterate that I do not have any doubt that the operators of the reactor on that fateful day shared culpability for the terrible events that followed. It's just that stopping at that is a does a terrible injustice to all who paid the price, and also does not inform the present and the future of all the facts that might help prevent future catastrophes.

Oh, I thoroughly agree with you. I don't for a second think that it was just the fault of the operators and other personnel at the reactor facility that gave rise to the catastrophe. They were part of a much larger system and that system had failure built into it. The Wikipedia treatment makes abundantly clear in no uncertain terms that the situation was extremely complex, the variables so many that it was virtually impossible to anticipate all that might or would happen in this circumstance. Just how informed and accurate is that account, I can't say, but it comes across as extremely well researched to put it mildly. The spelling of certain words suggests to me it was written by a European, and I'm thinking likely English. Of course, Europeans would be apt to have a greater interest in this, being closer to the epicenter of the accident.

Gotta check those out.

Meantime, I heard that this series is no longer available somewhere... Amazon Prime? Is it accessible at all? DVD, BR, Netflix, Youtube? TIA... (I still haven't seen it).

Great series! I’ve watched it thru three times now. I believe it’s only available on HBO and HBOmax.

nuclear power just heats water into steam and turns a turbine.

doesn't seem all that sexy.
Ah, but a nuclear power plant is so much more complex than a simple steam engine!

Tell me about it, I was a physics major.

Can I get a trial version of those?

not usually. HBO is always a bitch about free trials--though there was some recent, not sure if still active, Covid-related free month of HBO Now, but it didn't have all HBO content. I'm not sure what the deal is with that.

Binge watched it a little while back - thought it was brilliantly done, really impressed.

Read some criticisms of it in terms of accuracy, but really felt most of the deviations from strict historical accuracy were dramatically-justified. Though in the end I read so many contradictory accounts of what caused the disaster that I ended up more confused than I started. But in any case, it worked brilliantly as a bit of drama.

I liked the use of "equivalent accents". E.g the stroppy, cynical-about-the-boss-class miners being played by Scottish guys.

I got a free 7 day HBO trial back in fall '19 through Amazon just to watch this... no idea if all the content was available though since at the time I wasn't interested.

For sure the series took some "poetic license" however I think it was close enough to accurate.

The feeling of deep dread in the pit of ones stomach watching as the workers handled nuclear waste in (effectively) zero protective gear was palpable.
