So far, I have 3 GPU's running F@H GPU2 client 24/7.

8800GTS512 which produces about 5300ppd and runs a steady 65C with stock fan speed.
9800GTX+ which produces about 5800ppd and runs a steady 67C with stock fan speed.
GTX280 which produces about 7400ppd and runs a steady 63C with fan at 55% with eVGA tool. Without it, and the fan set to auto, it holds around 78-80C with ambient temps in my house anywhere from 70-75 F.

No crashes, no lockups. In the 9800GTX+ and GTX 280 rigs, I am also running the SMP 6.22 client on each quad core. (Q6600 & Phenom 9550 respectively).

So, I would appreciate any links you have to these cards you mentioned, failing, and I'd like to determine why. Whether it be from overheating (most likely), or other.

sorry, I lost this thread and just found it. I seem to remember several people complaining of failed and damaged cards from both camps after the f&h client came out. I just threw out a post in the dc forum to see if this was just anecdotal or my terrible memory rearing its ugly head. will post back with details.

HD 4850 > 9800GTX+. Cheaper, faster. You also get driver updates more often by going with AMD.

I would get the hd4850 over 9800gtx/+ just for the fact that it uses single external power connector...

Thanks for this, I had been considering 9800GTX+ but did not know it needed 2 external power connectors.

I have the Corsair VX550W - will it be able to handle the 9800GTX+? This PSU has one PCI-E 6 pin and one PCI-E 6+2 pin.

yes, the vx550 will be fine for a 9800gtx+. heck, you could run a gtx 280 on that bad boy or sli/xfire most cards without problems.

So is there a big difference between the brands of ATI cards? I found an ASUS 4850 for 179.99 with a 30 dollar mail in rebate. Yes\no? I am pretty set on this model due to the better performance for the money.

I seem to hear mainly good things about the ASUS cards but I myself have never owned one. I know visiontek seems to be the "best" for ATI cards in terms of warranty but I have heard it's hard to get them to actually honor their warranty so who knows there.

there have been numerous AR deals for $139.99 AR shipped on 4850's. the asus was $139.99 AR shipped about 10 days ago, in fact.

I just don't understand why is this thread about 2 great cards been completely hijacked with a talk of drivers...

What this should be about was that we have 2 great cards that offer high-end performance and features. Last time I saw that at this price point was like... never. Not even with the GF4 Ti4200

If you're going to really compare card vs card and have an eloquent discussion of just gameplay/FPS of then you would have to go to another forum entirely.

good point. why don't we take the OT driver discussion to a new thread and instead keep this one on 4850 vs 9800gtx+? I believe that several people involved here have the ability to do so...

Pretty odd/sad that a thread can be derailed to this extent. It's even worse that the main culprits are moderators. Oh well, nothing new here.

I would say that the 9800GTX+ and HD4850 are about even. The HD4850 will likely have slightly better default IQ and better high AA performance. The 9800GTX+ IQ *can* be made to look identical to ATI's though in the NV CP with a bit of gamma/ slight DV *about 5-10%*)slight contrast adjustments. The advantage of the NV card (OOB) is the quietness of the HSF, and the ability to use it (or another NV card) as PPU. I don't care for the phys-x stuff yet, maybe in the future and I do believe it has a future. I chose an OCed 260 and OC'ed it further and I get great performance and I like the card. I'm also sure I would have been happy with an HD4870-4850. I tend to stick with NV or ATI for a few cards at a time. Both companies make great GPU's and I'm glad we have a choice.
