I bought a WD 80gig HD and had to RMA it b/c it kept shutting down and "clicking." They sent me a replacement and it did the same thing after a while. I'm on my 3rd WD HD now.

I need to get data off of the 2nd WD hard drive before I return it. On startup, it just sits and clicks. I've tried:
1. the freezer trick
2. using a boot disk and fdisk/ mbr
3. slapping the drive
4. changing cables
5. changing jumper settings
6. using it as a slave, using it as a master

Using it as a slave, XP can't see it. The bios recognizes the drive as being there, but I can't get to it using xp. As a master, the bios recognizes it, but I can't go to "c:" The computer "sees" it but it can't access it. Any suggestions?

If your computer will boot with the drive attached, you need a good data recovery program. That might save what's on it -- ERD Disk Commander is amazing, and Ontrack also makes some data recovery software. There are others.

The other option is to send it in to a dedicated data-recovery house. They can recover pretty much anything from anything, but it could be very expensive.

Sorry that I don't have a solution for you, but I have to ask... What is "the freezer trick"?

Put the hd in the freezer for a couple of hours so the spindle bearings shrink and the platters will spin. Works sometimes for a drive that won't spin up so you can recover data.

I had the same exact thing happen to me at work. I ended up researching hard drive recovery, and unfortunately for you, for just a 40 gig hard drive, the minimum price was $800 and went up to $4000 depending on how severe the damage was.

Same here. The prices are ridiculous. Luckily I found a trial version of Get Data Back for NTFS on Kazaa

sounds like you might want to check your power supply before the 3rd drive dies. a bad\overloaded one will kill hard drives very easy
good luck

The power supply is an Antec 350W. Any way to tell if it's going bad? Everything else seems to work ok, and I don't have anything extreme running on the system. No overclocking or anything.
