HD Problem

Running Vista Ultimate on a Maxtor PATA HD. The HD was getting pretty full so I decided to add a Seagate SATA 500 gig and clone the IDE to the bigger SATA drive. I installed the SATA drive and went into BIOS. The new drive was detected but the old Maxtor primary master wasn't. Because I really wanted a clean install of Vista anyway I re-installed the OS on the new drive but I still want my pictures and my music from the old drive. I do have an external enclosure on hand but I'd like to keep the PATA in my rig for backups, etc. Should I try to troubleshoot my problems or remove the old drive completely? Where would one start? Cables or BIOS.? Any help appreciated. BTW the MB is an ASUS M2N-SLI. TIA

Try unplugging your optical drive. In my experience, the most common reason for the computer to not recognise a Harddrive is because it doesn't have enough power to spin it up at boot. If you unplug all unneeded 12V devices, you may be able to get it to work so that you can transfer the data over to the new drive. Then you can take out the old drive and plug the optical drives back in.

Could be a jumper selection problem on the hds. I've experienced the same problem for that very reason. Make sure drives are set as master/slave or both on cable select.
