HD transfer questions

i just bought a 160 gb maxtor and i would like to move all my info from a
40 gb hd to the new 160. how would i do this without having to reinstall windows?
like if i were to "copy" - "paste" all the info on the old one to the new one, remove the old one, then boot up with the new one, and make it seem like there was no change?

ive heard of ghost, but are there any free apps?

You can download a utility from Maxtors website to do what you want. If you bought a retail packaged drive, it would have come with a diskette that contains the utility. Ghost and Drive Image will do it as well but you have to buy those.

if you are just planniing on moving data, then the easiest way would be to plug your secondary drive into your computer as the slave drive... make sure that your jumpers are setup correctly for both hard drives..

this way, when you go to windows explorer, you'll see both drives there.. then from there, you can just copy and passte all your information that you need onto your new drive.. after you are finished, just take it out of the computer...

no need for any programs.

If you were copying a music folder or something off the old drive to a new drive with an installed OS I would say yes but making an exact copy of a drive you should use the software.
