HD2900XT and Adaptive Anti-Aliasing

I had the same problem with the X1900XT when it was new.

Adaptive Anti Aliasing, sometimes normal AA and sometimes Anisotropic Filtering just don't show up even after reboots, program restarts and messing with CAT AI.

Is this a problem with all ATI cards when they're young? I never had a problem with my 7950GTX laptop, I could Alt-Tab and tweak something, and instantly the filtering changed in-game.

With the 1900 and now the 2900 the driver options stick, but just don't do anything when I run certain games.

I've had these problems with HL2, Battlefield 2, Far Cry, FEAR, STALKER, and now Company of Heroes.

i know exactly what your referring to and yes i get it too, its because of cat AI, to do it that way to need to disable AI. you should always adjust the aa level in game first, dont leave it set to none or 0.

the af will stick depending on what you choses in the cat, i know they are sticking on mine by checking the fps when adjusting the levels. for me with bf2 and 2142 i need to set the aa level ingame or cat AI will take over with a setting of none ingame and it looks like far off objects aren't getting aa treatment.

you need to set the level ingame too and it will look much better. thats how i do it and i leave cat ai set to standard. i can adjust the filters just fine, box, tent and so on and i know they are working because of the fps difference in game. you have to exit the game to make the changes though, alt-tabing out and making 3d changes is never a good idea, especially with bf2, something about the CAT and punk buster, it thinks its a md5 hack when you do that.

my adaptive AA works fine though, i can tell its working just from the fps drop. just keep an eye on the fps while making changes, like adaptive aa, you should see a large fps gain with it disabled opposed to set on advanced.

is adaptive AA really worth it if u can only tell the difference by the drop in framerate?

well i've gotten AAA to work in BF2, but it's been a year since I first had those problems. The issue now, is STALKER and COH. STLALKER is known to not support AA, but I can't figure out why Adaptive AA never works in COH, no matter which setting CAT AI is on.

EDIT: I got Adaptive to work in COH, but I had to turn off CAT AI, then go into the game and change the AA settings and then apply ingame again before it recognized. Weird.

it does significantly clean up the image and make it look pretty, i forgot to mention that, hehe. youll know when its on from the transparent textures, they are super sampled and it truly does look much better.

Yeah I know. I've dipped my hand in AAA and TRAA once or twice before. BF2 was the game that needed TRAA the most.

Unfortunately, my X1900XTX is far to slow to use such nice features now.

I hate you guys.

heheh, hey i dont even run it on advanced in bf2. bf2 is the game ive seen it have the largest effect in but i like to keep well over 100fps at 1920x1200 so i just keep it on performance even with two HD2900's

Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread, but fern, what kind of temps are you getting on your crossfired cards?

Mine are idling at close to 70 and I am worried there is not enough space between them on the mobo. Maybe I just need to add more fans?

Another funny thing is the cards are dead silent until I start a 3D app, which I am not used to. My 1900XT always did the big wind-up whenever I started the PC, which at least let me know everything was working well. I kind of miss it.

Cheers,
KT

same here, my bottom card can reach 90 after gaming and does idle right around 60-70. its just because they are stacked so close to each other, one of the cards isnt going to get good intake. i went and placed a few fans blowing some air right on the cards, it helped about 10 degrees but that cooling design is just terrible for using two cards in crossfire regarding air intake.

same with me on the no spin up at boot and my 1900's did. must just be the gpu bios.

Unless the game uses large amounts of vegetation AAA should run fine on that card.

If you're having performance issues use 4xAA with performance AAA and that should run fine with even heavy vegetation.

The problem is the 1920x1200 resolution, not AAA itself.

Great, thanks for the info, I was a little worried. I think I have a couple of case fans lying around I can throw in there to cool things down a bit.

Cheers,
KT
