Anyone hear of any rumors of either WD or Hitachi releases drives greater than the current 1tb offerings?

WD and Samsung could easily put 4 of the new 320/334gb platters into a drive to make ~1.25tb.

My guess is that they'll wait until at least 1.5-2.0tb for marketing reasons.

The highest density platters in current offerings are 334GB. A four platter design is possible. Even a five platter design - Hitachi seems to have the best experience with these in the realm of 3.5 inch ATA format - would offer capacities over 1.5TB. Time will tell I guess.

EDIT: The thought of a Raptor with a single 334GB platter, SATA300, NCQ, 32 or 64MB buffer sounds good though! >150MB/S reads on outer tracks really necessitates the SATA300 requirement - an industry first.

Cliff notes - there probably isn't enough demand in the market to go larger yet. The companies will reap some profits for a while before launching the next new product.

I know that Samsung's 334GB platters are thicker than usual, so 5 platter drives are out of the question until they can make thinner platters. Don't know about WD's 320GB platters, but hopefully they're regular size.

Samsung did announce a 1.5TB drive around the time that they started shipping the F1, so who knows.

Well i just installed a few 750g drives over the weeked, and I had to use adapters. As most cases have more 5.25 bays than 3.5 inch. I couldn't help to wonder why they don't make drives 5.25 anymore. At least the high end ones. I would not mind, like a 2.5tb drive if it was 5.25. Heck, even a full height. Why not, I don't care about physical size, I care about capacity.
