HDTV or analog flat...

I am looking for a new tv set. I have about 1000 dollars but of course don't need to spend all of it if I don't have to. I am looking for a 32 in. or 36 inch tv. I could get a 32 in. HDTV for a grand but is HDTV worth it. I have a progressive scan dvd player and a $2000 surround sound setup so I am looking for quality. I am living in the dorms at Purdue so I get their cable which isn't HD compatable (I still get NBC in HD and such). What would you guys do? If you have a certain tv set that you recommend let me know.

Get the HDTV anyways. It can double as a monitor.

Well unless you have digital cable, or satellite tv, or a hdtv tuner, having an HDTV is pretty much useless. if you just want the best go with HDTV. If you already have a progressive scan dvd player, you don't need an hdtv to see the dvds in prgressive scan. Although an HDTV will play progressive scan dvds better than the palyer, you don't necessarily need it.

on the other hand, if you do have digital cable, or satellite tv, than I recommend you spend the extra cash to get an hdtv ready set. Its amazing. the picture qaulity is unbeleivable. you won;t know it until you have it.

p.s Oh, when it comes to doubling as a monitor, its not as easy as one might think. so don't buy iy just for that functionality.

Let me get this straight, if I turn on my DVD player's progressive scan capability my non HDTV Wega suddenly will be able to display non-interlaced material?

But to answer the original question...

It is foolish to buy a regular TV if you do any of the following:

1) play video games
2) watch DVDs
3) want to watch stunning HD

Well there are some tvs out there that do support 480p and not 1080i or 780p... they are called Enhanced TVs... I will not get one of those the difference in price between those and HDTVs are like 50-100 bucks... so what.... I do not play video games on it... and I do not have digital cable.... I will also not use it as a monitor... I have a 22 in Professional Sony Monitor that I spent 1500 bucks on... but I am a DVD freak... I have over 100 dvds and I am getting more all the time...

ANY TV MODEL SUGGESTIONS?

Exactly my point, anybody who realizes the difference would almost certainly wait & buy the real thing, the uninitiated general population will stick with their non-flat, interlaced, SDTV.

I'd recommend the HDTV myself, they are an improvement for DVD watching even though High Definition DVDs are not available as of yet. If you don't already have satellite TV I'd recommend waiting a little bit then getting in on a new revision of the Free Dish promotion that we're going to be starting towards the end of August. When it's released we have a way planned for customers that sign up to get a free HDTV tuner (new model 811) if they commit to 2 years of programming. Quick overview of this receiver in terms of features. It will have a DVI output, component out, S-video and composite as well along with a built in OTA digital tuner for digital signals that are broadcast over the air.

If any stations in your area broadcast HDTV is free. Provided you have a TV and a HDTV receiver.

Just go with a regular tv. For about $600 you can get a nice 32 inch tv. Then after you graduate college and find yourself a job, then you can buy an HDTV.. By then prices will have fallen and their will actually be some more hdtv content. Right now I have a fusion hdtv card in my computer and a regular antenna and the hdtv programming is still very limited. Go to www.titantv.com and you can see the schedule for yourself.

I also went to purdue (graduated in '93) and had about a 4000 dollar stereo in the dorm (wiley hall). Ahh, memories.
