Headphones for gaming!

Hey.. who here uses headphone for gaming? I recently tried headphones instead of my usual surround speaker setup (to avoid pissing ppl off) and the difference is like night and day. I have an Audigy ES sound card (the original OEM). Are there any drivers or tweaks make the sound card sound good with headphones? The built-in "headphone" setting sounds ok... but I'm looking for something that will sound good, especially for multichannel content such as EAX and movies. Watching movies with Dolby Headphone sounds awesome, but too bad it won't work for games... any suggestions??? Thanks!

First.. you need decent headphones. What do you have? I'd choose headphones over speakers anyday.

Yeah i dunno about you, but i really prefer headphones to speakers.

I am currently using Sennheiser RS 110s, & before these i used the PC-150s.

Both are great IMO.

Yeah thats really like a joke saying that speakers are in any way comparable to headphones. Much easier to hear where certain foot steps are coming from. If you need any kind of proof look at any professional gamer ever they all use headphones for that reason.

The new Creative x-fi is supposed to do surround sound through regular headphones which should be good. It's supposed to do sounds from above and below too.

Eh? Any card which fully supports DS3D like the live and audigy's support 3d positioning through stereo speakers and headphones including vertical cues.

Well, from all accounts the X-Fi seems to do a much better job at it.

I FPS game with my sons who are set up on the next desk over so headphones are a must since the background sounds from a speaker will give away your position. I do let my 5 year old sneek peeks at my screen as a handicap. "Ha, Ha pwned you!" he yells as my lifeless storm trooper goes rolling down the hill.

Probably from tweaking some of the far sounds to sound louder in the drivers, I heard something about that.
And it still doesn't mean that older cards perform poorer in vertical 3d positioning.

Thanks for the input.

hmm... I never said that headphones were bad in the first place, just that they don't sound quite the same as speakers, most notably the "sound inside your head" feeling.

anyway, I agree that nice headphones are a factor. Any other suggestions on what headphones/headsets to get? how about the difference between, say, EAX (2,3,4) vs A3D vs Sensaura with headphones?
