Senn HD-580's.
I bought em at Amazon for about $150 new (they're around $190 now). They're simply amazing for the price range. They sound even better amped (so I doubt your ipod would push these hard).
I use a stereo to RCA adapter to plug my speakerout port from my PC to a bookshelf stereo system I have to quasi amp these.
Listening to Sasha - Involver in utter bliss as we speak.
Very very very highly recommended if you're not looking for something portable.
Super comfy, I wear em for 4-5 hours when I'm working/studying and never tire.

They vibrate to give the sensation of more bass. It works too.

I had a few portables that came with vibrating headphones, even bought a set that work with any source. They just gave me massive headaches.

I think I'm going for the A900's. Thanks for all your help!

These MS2s fall within your price range, yet do not require an amp to sound great. They are merely tweaked Grado SR225s. Or, if you need a larger soundstage, the Sennheiser HD595s are supposed to be excellent.

Great choice. The A900 is a great all-around headphone that doesn't so much excel in one single category as it just does everything pretty well. It's easily powered without an amp and will sound great with nearly any type of music.
The Senn HD 580 also sounds wonderful but (as has been said) they improve tremendously with an amp and you'll need a good headamp to really make them shine and get the most out of them.
