I just got back from street scene in SD. I was up close to the speakers for about 4 hours. Is it possible to lose hearing a little from that? Its been about 24 hours and my hearing seems to be about 90% of what it used to be.....

PS- this was the first time Ive been to a major rock concert like this. My friend who stood next to me swears she can hear fine. She is ~a foot shorter and a bit below the crowd however....

What....speak up.

Sadly yes you can have hearing lose after only a couple of minutes or even seconds. It depends how loud the music was. Did you have any ringing in your ears after the concert? That is always a sign of some damage.

Yea... a little. Fusk. Should I just live with it? Or should I seek help. If my mom found out I did something that stupid she would end me.

If you have any tinnitus (ringing in your ears) it's a sign of mild hearing damage.
Wear earplugs next time. If you're worried about not being cool, remember that most musicians wear them too.

There are some reports that Ginko Biloba can combat tinnitus but that's yet to be proven.

if you hear ringing you've prolly damaged your hearing. next time you go to a concert wear earplugs, you'll actually hear the music better. you can get them at hardware stores.

Once probably won't be that bad. If the ringing doesn't go away soon then it might be bad. I would definitly take ear plugs to a concert in the future.

Ok thanks guys. I feel like a fusking idiot. Ugh... I should have known better. Im sure its not bad enough to be an issue now, but if I go deaf at 50 ill really be pissed.

Is there any sort of quick fix / shot I can get at a Doc that will make that less likely?

Um.. thats not really what I wanted to hear

Just kidding dude. This happend the first time I went to a concert and quite a few times since then. I'm usually fine by the next morning. Do you like to crank the stereo? I love to so I was already accustomed to those kinds of volumes, give or take.

?

I think he means that the ringing should stop and you won't notice a difference. It is hard to tell how much loss you will have because you can't actually guage it to anything. You might not notice turning the tv up one notch. You can also lose hearing in different ranges, the lows and highs of the music. It comes down to that you won't notice any difference unless you go to a bunch more concerts were the damage will add up. Hearing loss is permenant, once you destroy the little hairs in your ears, you can't grow them back.

I have very very mild put persistent tinnitus. It can get annoying when it's quiet and I'm listening for something.

Are we breeding a bunch of softies these days? Go back 20 years or so and if you were not deaf for a day or two after a concert, then the grouup were not playing loud enough!! LOL!! You will be fine!!

I still swear my hearing has not been the same since going to a George Clinton Concert last April.

Ya, the ringing will go away. You did damage your hearing but it probably won't manifest itself till your around 45 - 50. Especially if you keep it up.

exactly, it comes back to bite you in the ass even if you don't notice anything now.

i experienced deafness after having a bottle of water (+ dry ice ) explode about 1.5 feet away from my head. yea, it sucks.

I got the ringing thing not from loud music, but from years of loud motorcycles. It is always present in quiet places....and there's no cure for it. And it's nothing to scoff at. Basically it sucks.....what? Yes I've lost some hearing also. Loud noises=hearing loss.

The hearing loss accumulates over time. And believe me, it sucks, like Bluefront said.

Heh.

Well, now im off to see the skin doctor to confirm that a little white patch I have on my face is only incurable depigmentation and not skin cancer.

Wow, this has really been a great week.

Ill let you all know how it went.

I have tinnitus, and its terrible (it was)

It bugged me out 5 years ago...I couldn't function,

but now I am fine with it, I have learned to ignore it.

It was all caused by loud concerts, playing in a band, and terrible ear infections as a child
