Something wierd i noticed that, every week or so my CPU seems to be runing cooler and cooler in idle even thou the temp outside goes up in spring. when i first got my 1100 cpu about a month ago it would idle at 51C but now it idles about 46C, maybe the retail thermal pad become more efficinte as time goes on cause it compresses more?

If you're using the thermal pad, you probably didn't do the proper "burn in" procedure for it (which many find quite scary) and it's doing a long slow "burn in". Thermal grease doesn't need the burn in since no phase change is neccessary to complete it's application.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa??????!!!

I will try and put this as kindly as I can, you are full of sh.t.

Burnin is the process of running you processor at a lower speed and higher vre for awhile, then clocking it. It has no connection whatsoever with the thermal pad that comes with stock cpu cooler setups.

Phase change my ass, what a crock.

baldy: I don't know if there is a name for the exact procedure (hence the quotes), but the "burn in" is for the TIM and not the CPU. To properly setup the TIM you must go through the phase change process where it essentially goes from a squishy pad to a gooeys substance at which point it conforms and sticks to the CPU. Often this makes it work about as well as thermal grease.

I'll try and find a link.

Quote from Agilent:
Today's high-performance TIM is made of "phase change" material - meaning its high conductivity only occurs after the material has undergone a chemical change due to being subjected to a high temperature (usually the first time the chip is turned on).

Quote from HardOCP:
Thermosonic does specify that their TIM is a "Phase Change Material", meaning that we have to heat it up to make it work right.  However, I could not find anywhere where they document exactly how hot the material needs to be before the phase change takes place and the TIM begins to work with maximum efficiency.
