Heatsink on VGA

I read somewhere on this forum that if you want to remove a video card that was glued on to your VGA, all you had to do was put it in a the freezer for a few minutes and pop it off. My heatsink also has clips on the side though.

Well, I think I did that, but with a can of compressed air. I think I put it too close to the heatsink on my ti4200 and now it overheats a lot. My monitor turns off every other minute.

If the heatsink is kind of off, then if I put it in the oven for a few minutes, then it'll fix the problem right? Or heat it up with a lighter for a minute?

I've got a 9600 Pro coming in the mail. But I just need to get this card working for a few days.

"Put it in the oven?" You are joking right? Putting an electronic component in an oven will kill it for sure and possibly burn down your home.

How did you dislodge the HS w/a can of compressed air? The laws of physics call "foul" on that claim. Methinks you went to try to pry it off and you gave up halfway thru.

The HS is held on by the pins/clips to the side of the HS. Also by the pink pad (proper name is "Thermal Interface Material" or TIM) b/t the HS and the GPU.

Remove the pins from the HS. Put card in freezer for two hours. Insert flat bladed screwdriver and just give it a gentle "twist" it should pop right off. BUT you will then have to remove all the TIM already on there and put on some new TIM. Some white stuff from Radio Shack should work until you get the 9600.

Hair-dryer works well though. Just blow at it for a couple minutes.
