Hmm... I see the Nexus 4 and Moto X. Is the Nexus 5 not available? Or is it more expensive than the Moto X in Canada (it's much cheaper in the US than the Moto X)?

From your list the Moto X is a REALLY easy choice. Though I'm surprised it is cheap enough to even be in the same group as all those last year model of phones you are comparing it with.

Exclude Galaxy S3 (a generation behind) and Nexus 4 (a generation behind, lack LTE) from your options. Among the S4 mini, Xperia SP, and Moto X I would choose Moto X. It is Motorola's flagship while the other two are not of Samsung and Sony, respectively. You give up removable storage (micro-SD) with Moto X, but the other phones' base capacity is 8 GB. Ugh.

Here are spec comparisons.

Moto X v. Xperia SP
Moto X v. Galaxy S4 Mini

The S4 mini is actually a rather nice device, but the X is definitely better unless you are prioritizing media storage or battery life.

Can't you get the Nexus 5 from the Play Store in Canada though?

Moto G for affordable. No other "cheap" Android phone competes with it.

Fido is my carrier

I am searching a smartphone around $ 50 avec a contract for 2 years.

I want a good picture camera in my smart phone.

I want a smart phone more reliable as possible.

S4 mini is it too small compare to the S3 ?

Moto x is it better than the S3 and Nexus 4 ?

the Nexus 5 and S4 are too expensive for me with Fido.

Thank-you !

So, $50 with a contract, presumably in Quebec? Have you considered buying a Nexus 5 outright from google, and getting a "bring your own device" discount from Fido?

I can't speak for the camera performance of the S3 and Nexus 4, but the Moto X is a better overall device than both.

As for size, only you can really say whether a particular phone is too big/small by trying them out in a store.

Moto X is better than the S3 and the Nexus 4, yes. S4 mini isn't too small but 960x540 is a passé. That phone is gimped in many other ways and it really is meant to be an inexpensive S4. When you can get a flagship phone (Moto X) for the same price, there is no reason to give it up and choose a mid-range device.

The more I think about it the easier the decision it seems. Given the choices, Moto X is a no-brainer.

The Galaxy S3 and S4 are both great, proven phones.

You don't get much useful advice here, for the most part you just get 'whatever the latest thing is the best and everything else is worthless'.

Yeah, as BYO the OP could get the same service on the $45 Standard plan *plus* the 10% BYOD discount. That's almost $10 every month.

It helps if you read the thread. He can't afford the S4 - even on contract ($375).

a generation behind for the S3 and Nexus 4.

Is it a big problem ?

It is not a problem at all. But your quest was what the best choice would be among the options you listed. The S3 and the N4 are both capable phones (I currently have a N4 and love it) and will remain so for the foreseeable future, but unless you give us more criteria I can only assume the choices are available to you in equal terms.

I got the ZTE vital (aka virgin mobile supreme) for $150. It is an incredible piece of hardware for the money. It works with ringplus to make it an even better deal. It is basically a galaxy S3 (AT&T variant) with 1GB of RAM. So the only real drawback is that you might actually have to close apps (omg the horror). Ive never actually run out of memory or felt anything that resembles swapfile thrashing on windows. It seems to always be using 600MB of memory no matter what I'm doing.

I somehow skipped the psot about his carrier being Fido.

My post is primarily in response to people dismissing the S3, when IMO the S3 is probably the best bargain available.

I would be concerned about the availability of future updates to Android on the S3. It is going to get KitKat (4.4), but the effort required to update Samsung's TouchWiz customizations may mean that's the last one it would get.

I'm not a fan of the glass back on the Nexus 4, and also found it too big for one-handed use. However, it will get Android updates fairly quickly.

In the USA the S4 is readily available used for $250-275. And often free with a contract.

He's in Canada, on Fido.

Specifications only matter if you plan to use those phones for apps that require higher specs.

Generic "advice" is useless when a specific situation is being discussed, especially given the variety of pricing and incentives that are location dependent.

The $50 gift card only applies to new signups on "select" plans.

Specifications only matter if you plan to use those phones for apps that require higher specs.

This is true. Someone who wants to run lots of apps simultaneously might find the 1GB of RAM on a S3 limiting, especially given the additional overhead of TouchWiz. It's less of an issue with the S4 Mini (1.5GB), Moto X and N4 (both 2GB).

It's for a basic use.

It's for a upgrade of my last phone.

Motorola Krzr K1 bought in 2008.

What do you think about this phone ?

First time, i will use the Phone it's the principal reason.

Who between Motorola or Samsung or LG could be better for the sound during a call ?

little bit Internet

Not really video and music and video games

Email

Picture

It will be my first Smartphone.

Maybe that more later my idea could be different.

What brand phone is better for the long time at least 3 ou 4 years. Is it possible for the reliability ?

Thank-you !

It's going to be difficult to answer this as sound quality during calls is partly dependent on signal quality. However, sound quality is not generally an issue on modern smartphones.

All of the phones can handle these tasks.

Difficult to say as Motorola is now owned by Google, so they have no track record. LG have a poor history of software updates. A Samsung phone with a removable battery might last longer as you can buy a replacement battery when the original starts fading.

I'm a very happy owner of a Moto X, and would recommend it over the others, all else being equal.

Does the S3 screen has a good protection againt scratch ?

Is it very important to buy screen protection a invisible shield for the S3 ?

I think that to take the S3.

It's for a basic use.

I don't want to spend too much for a phone.

Is it very important to download the new android version for the S3 ?

or i can stay on the android version installed on the S3 when i bought the S3 ?

Thank-you !
