Guys, what's the best heatsink for AMD XP? I have a XP1800+ with a cooler master HS. After installing leaving the computer on for an hour, I already noticed the HS is getting kinda hot. Also, what's the most economical choice for HS? Thanks!

alpha 8045 is very good, but also take a look at the thermalright sk-6. it is pretty much even with the alpha, if not slightly better. very easy to install and works great. check to make sure what will fit on your mobo. some posts have said that people had problems fitting the alpha on their motherboard (specifically the 8kha+, which is what i have with an sk6). the sk-6 is also cheaper.

Tt products = 10 pounds of my dog's sh!t

Go with the Alpha PAL8045. I've got one at home (tbird 1.2gHz) and 2 at the office (cooling XP 1700+s).

thx for the inputs ppl. I have a GigaByte ga7dx mobo. it does have 4 holes around the cpu socket, but I read somewhere that alpha is not feasible for the ga7dx due to the capacitor around the socket or something like that. Can someone verify this for me??? I hate to do a lot of modification to make the alpha fit. thx

How hard are the alpha clips to attatch to the mobo? I am considering getting this fan from SVC for my new EPoX 8kha+, but would like some input.

The PAL8045 doesnt use clips. I suggest you take a look at the review at www.hardocp.com

The PAL8045's clip is very easy to use. If you screw up using the PAL8045, well, that'd be very embarrassing

Thanks for pointing that out FlowerMan. I also noticed that the alpha didnt have any clips when I was looking at some installation pics. Right now I'm trying to decide between the Alpha or the new HSF from Dr. Thermal

The hollow core thermoengine barely keeps my mom's PIII-750 at idle cool... I dont see how adding a copper core and bending the fins will help it cool a tbird or XP well

you CANNOT use the alpha 8045 on the ga-7dx or ga-7dxr motherboard without slight modification, a corner on the heatsink collides with a capacitor/transistor/whatever/thingy i belive alpha's webiste notes this, even with pictures

ok, i was kinda wrong, THE ALPHA 8045 WILL NOT WORK ON THE GA-7DX !!!!!! it will however work on my board (ga-7dxr) with slight modification (i found out here)
so i would suggest the thermalright sk-6 with either the delta or the ys-tech fan whichever you like

SeiyaMan, I'm currently using the GA-7DX with the PAL8045. If you really want to use this HS, you'll need to slightly bend one of the capacitors out of the way. You can do it by slowy applying force to the top of one side the capacitor you want to bend. Eventually, with enough force, one bottom of the capacitor will lift off the board. You only need to bend the capacitor far enought out of the way so that the bottom of the HS will not sit on top of the capacitor when you attach the HS. I'm not very technical so I don't know if this will negatively affect the capacitor's design but my system has been running stable for the past 2 weeks.

ShallowHal, you'll have to do the same with the capacitor at the corner of the socket on your Shuttle AK31 to use this HS.

Of course, you can alway mod the HS instead.

hodo, i'm afraid that i'll just break the capacitor doing that. you're pretty lucky that everything is running fine. so does anyone knows a good deal for sk-6 and delta fans? thx

Look at this website www.overclockers.com they have a nice roundup of about 21 HSF with cooling numbers on each.
The best air cooled unit by far was the Swiftech 462-A, but I doubt that will fit on your MB if the Alpha won't and it's expensive. I have the
OCZ Gladiator which has the same cooling figure as the Alpha and I like it, but it is one of the louder HSF. You can pickup an original Gladiator
for around $25 + shipping. It's a 100% copper unit with a Delta Fan.

I've used both Vantec 6035 & 6027 the latter is alot quieter and about the same or better on the cooling.
Am running the 6027 on An XP 1800+ I won online - Thanks AMD ;-)
