Help Improve My System

My system is in my sig.

I'm thinking about getting a new CPU. Would a Q9650 overclocked be worth the upgrade?

I don't game a lot, it's occasional.

I do a lot of multitasking and just like to have a fast computer.

If that CPU isn't worth the upgrade, would anything be a significant improvement? I would just stick with the q9300 but it's not overclocking well for me.

I guess It would be depend on overclock on the new cpu as out of box it looks real close in mhz to your overclocked cpu. You could look at the cpu charts here may help you decide.

Maybe when the prices go down for Intel, if they haven't already but a good HD can also make things faster. I just setup a SCSI u320 config using a Fujitsu 300, HD tune says max transfer of 126mb and minimum of 60mb average 113mb...

I think the harddrive setup is pretty good. I'm using two Sata 300 640gb drives Raid 0 and reading from those writing to my sata 300 1tb drive it usually transfers in the 90mb/s range. 97mb/s is the fastest I've seen. Raid made a huge difference.

That still is a good chip. I'd start with a new board. Gigabyte are making some really good boards these days. Might want to ask someone to recommend a great overclocking board and take it down from there.

So what's actually running slowly? You're not going to get a whole lot faster than a 3 GHz quad core. When you say you like to multitask, what programs do you have open?

Yes, it's not clear what the OP is hoping to improve. Or does he just wanna go "faster"?

There's really lag or real wait time as it is, but I just wanted "to go faster".

I may just way a while longer since you guys don't really see it being worth the upgrade.

I think I will get a new mb and psu though. My vcore fluctuates from 1.24v loaded to 1.36v at idle. That doesn't seem normal.

Software is waaay too unreliable for voltage readings. You'd have to get a digital multimeter and test it that way but i'm not sure vcore can be tested. It could very well be the mobo though.
