Help! k7s5a won't power up.

I need some help with this one. I have a 250 watt power supply hooked up to this and I cannot get the board to power up for anything. I'm just wandering if it won't power up at all with a 250 watt, and I just need to get a bigger power supply or if this determines that the motherboard is DOA. Any input is greatly appreciated.

could be any number of things

first i would pull everything out of the system except for the cpu/ram/video card, then i would clear the cmos. then see if it will post.

if not then you gotta figure its either the ram/mobo/vidcard... the 250w power supply may not be enough for the system to run stable, but it should still post.

ohhh one other thing... its also a good idea to pull out the cpu/ram/vidcard and reseat them, making sure they are in good, especially press hard on the ram to make sure its all the way in.

You need to try different things. Make sure though that the powersupply is still working correctly for you. Even though many 250's will work for Athlon's, you may not be getting enough juice. I had the same problem you are having and the only thing I was able to do to fix it was to buy a different mobo! After a week of trying different things, ( swapping memory in and out, different video cards, different powersupplies, clearing CMOS) I was never able to get it working.. I suggest if you can't get it working and if you are wanting an excuse to go to another chipset, I suggest going to a KT266A chipset. I got a Epox- 8KHAL ($76.00 + $7.00 S/H at www.newegg.com) and I love it.

Make sure that you have the power button wires connected correctly!

I agree with hwstock. I once built a compter that wouldnt power up. I even tried putting the mobo in a different system. It was then I realized that I had the power switch cable from the case on the wrong motherboard pins.

If you haven't previously used that powersupply, then make sure you check the 115/230V switch setting on the rear psu panel ...........
I had a brand new case/psu once that came with the setting on 230V, took me hours to find the problem!

Are the fans spinning up ........?
You could have a dead psu.

Also, what size cpu are you using in this mb?
I couldn't boot with a 1.2G Athlon on a 250W Powerman psu, so I used a 800MHz Duron and it posted..........ok.

Just as an update I have made sure the power switch was set up correctly. I've shorted the pins to make it power up with a jumper and still nothing. I am running a vodoo 3 that worked fine in another system and the power supply is a known good. The processor is an Athlon XP 1600 and two sticks of 128mb sdram. Also I have read in another forum that this board will not power up with a cheap power supply. I have tried everything from reseating everything to taking it out of the case and trying to boot it up. I think the way that I'm going to go is to buy another power supply and see if that fixes it. I need a better one anyway so I'm not losing anything doing it.

I don't know if this will help, but have you tride to boot with only one stick of memory attached? One problem I had was the AGP slot. You should try to seat and reseat the video board a few times. Sometimes that worked for me.

dude... unattach your motherboard and make sure that none of the posts are touching the motherboard.. i had the same problem and my computer went fizz... hehe... anyways just make sure your motherboard isnt hitting anything in the mounting of it.

I had similar troubles with the ECS K7S5A board. The biggest problem was not having the Video Card thoroughly seated in the AGP socket. When I turned on the power, it would beep 8 times, pause, the beep twice. Even though I had put it in a few times, it only posted after I made sure to seat it all the way in.

I have a 300 watt power supply so that may have saved me from the trouble you are having.

You can also double check all the other jumper settings, your switches and led mb connections, and try shorting (re-setting) the cmos with the mb power connector unplugged, this has worked for me................
It's best to get the mb to post before installing it into the case, with just the memory, video card, cpu & hsf installed........ just as Boonesmi advised...........!

Keep at it, this mb is picky, but worth the effort once working ...........it's very fast.

Thanks for all your help everyone. After a lot of troubleshooting in the case, I decided that I would take it out and try to boot it outside the case. That worked, and I'm still not sure why it wouldn't boot. I'm thinking that the case must have been shorting it out somewhere. Anyway it's back in the case and up and running since yesterday afternoon. This is a great board that was definatly worth the small amount of work. Just one thing....my processor is running about 40C idle. I'm not sure about the xp processors but it seem's kind of high for idle speed. Definatley need to get a better Heatsink and fan before overclocking.
