My first suggestion would be to use knoppix. Here is
link, to a mirror. Knoppix is a bootable CD, with it you can run Linux of the CD without having to install anything in your hard drive. You will have the reliability of Debian, and a whole bunch of different Window Managers.
On the other hand if you want to install Linux on your hard drive, I would suggest Red Hat. Just install windows first, and let windows have the MBR. You can install Red Hat on a second primary partition, and just use a boot floppy to boot into linux. That's what I would suggest,
